idk but i feel like if they improved to MG34 to MG42 but keep the fire rate at around 900 or 800, wouldn't it make them more economical? even for one target kill, a quick one second burst would set you back 20 rounds of ammo....and this is going to be a problem if you start running out of ammo. i think the mg34 and 42 are amazing, portable, easy and quick barrel change, extremely high rate of fire, reliable, but, if you dont have the ammo, they are worthless...and germany suffered a lot from the long supply line in russia and even if they had tons of ammo, it would be tough for the soldiers to carry enough rounds if they have to fight without support from, say the half track...

If you're ok with critique it's worth noting that there was a Fuhrer order to Machine Gun any lifeboats. Incredibly, it's believed this only actually happened ONCE, U-boat crews thought this dishonorable and almost universally refused to do it.

I’ve read that the mg42 was abysmally inaccurate because of its design and rate of fire. In contrast, the Bren gun was a tack driver. The mg 42 was useful for area denial against a group, but not that good against a single individual at a distance. Bren gunners could pick off a sniper with a short burst.

Also, the rate of fire was a logistical problem, in that huge quantities of ammo were needed to feed it. An mg42 team was mostly ammo carriers, but it could still burn through what they had quite quickly.

U-10 surfacing to surrender isn’t a huge deal imo. But not thinking to destroy all sensitive materials, especially the enigma machine, is something worthy of being executed for. If ya can’t destroy that intel then ya scuttle the boat and take it w/ ya to your grave.

Giving yourself up is one thing and part of war. But the incompetence of surrending the enigma machine would end up leading to the deaths of so much more and really impacted the war in the Allie’s favor against Germany from then on.

The Browning M1919 imo easily sounded the best and most beastly out of the common 4 WW2 MGs. After the M1919, both German MGs sounded more intimidating than the 1917 Browning imo

The sound probably became synonymous with terror as it would often mean you’ve just stumbled into a concealed machined gun position.

So a higher rate of fire does not mean a more powerful machine fun, or else all machine guns would be built with ridiculously high rates of fire, the MG42 was a lot cheaper if less controllable, they even lowered the rate of fire on its second itertion, the m34 is the superior gun, but it is a lot more expensive to produce, whilst the mg42 is still a perfectly fine gun, and you couldn't overstate that ease and low production cost of prod

Thats why if you look st all the buried guns found you always found extra barrels so they can keep shooting none stop and only worry about ammo i would recommend any machine gunner to always carry extre barrel or 2

The MG42 / Browning .50 are as close to perfection as we can realistically achieve. Could you imagine what Germany could of created if they'd of had the time and resources!!

The lifeboat scene could also be in reference to a war crime committed off the coast of south america by a german commerce raider.

I cannot remember where i read up on this but the underwater scene in saving private ryan was included to convey to a general audience the lack of anywhere being safe on that beach, and to portray the danger of drowning the men faced on landing.

What the hell is revolutionary in machine guns?

I mean, one in hundred bullets only hit its target. And not ever the "rigth" one. So at least it is 99% in-efficient.
When the fight-line is not clear, you run risk killing the own people, in so-called friendly fire. At least an MG kills everybody on the field.
And when you have to run from the scenery, you cannot carry 30kg. And the enemy is happy about it, take it and shot you into teh back. The only reason is obviously ... selling more bullets... get more profit. And yes of course with one MG and two soldiers you can easily manage 20 enemies at the same time. What it isn't told here, a MG-Nest is always the first target by every granate, tank or artillery or you get in cross-fire.

In the Estonian movie (1944), the soldier manning the MG-42 does a hand gesture to his buddy to get more ammo. Does anyone here knows what that hand gesture is called?ThX.

While I was a Bradley IFV Platoon Leader, I would mimic the MG42s rate of fire with my turret mounted coaxial M240D machine gun by opening up the gas port to greatly increase rate of fire... The cyclic rate approached 1000 RPM, which was kinda right between the MG34 and 42. As for dismount firepower, I had an M231 port weapon that fired 100% tracer @ 1200 rounds per minute!
