TOURING a $4 million dollar LAKEHOUSE | River Bay ( Algonquin Highlands )

Nestled in a dense sugar maple forest in the Algonquin Highlands, this hillside lakehouse hovers above its naturally sloping terrain near the water's edge. Located in a quiet bay on Kawagama Lake, the retreat offers a unique tree-lined perch with expansive views of the forest, sky, and water. Three parallel concrete foundation walls are anchored to the shallow bedrock, allowing the site’s natural drainage and wind patterns to flow freely. Despite the construction challenges posed by the rugged terrain, the result is an immersive forest experience.

The building's design features an 18cm thick prefabricated Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) structure, allowing significant portions to be built during winter when the site was inaccessible. The CLT provides both structural integrity and a warm, robust interior finish. The dark exterior palette blends with the surroundings, creating a backdrop for the forest's vibrant colors. Inside, a warm, minimal palette of wood and stone connects the building to its natural setting.

A galvanized steel bridge connects the granite slab steps of the hillside to the glazed front doorway, offering framed views of the forest and lake upon arrival. Living areas are organized around an elevated outdoor living room enclosed with a motorized screen wall. Bedrooms on either side of the common rooms provide a quieter, intimate experience. Expansive glass walls throughout animate and warm the living spaces, creating a powerful visual connection to the forest and bathing the interior in natural light.
