Nice review but i think your considerations about OS could be useless, it depends by the user if i know how to use Linux you will be able to install and use anything you want if not you can choose windows...Maybe you don't follow opensource community, Linux is constantly upgraded too and become every day more easy to use for everybody, you missed also to say that you don't need so much ram and disk space to have linux installed on a laptop! Furthermore your laptop will last longer! I have an Asus Rog 8th Gen since six years now because i dont use windows anymore, so please, thanks for your review about laptops but don't talk about things you don't know...

As someone who has owned around 12 gaming laptops, the #1 criteria is repair process. You can dance around on specs, airflow, screen brightness all that jazz but these things are out of date fast and most will have a support issue within two to three years. The rest amounts to matter of taste ultimately. The only other hard criteria is get 32 Megs of RAM and the best GPU you can afford.

The reason I'm inclined to gaming laptop for work is due to additional cooling because I work at home and dont want to turn on AC all the time. But rhe dilemma is too many spec and too little I can do in term of customization after the laptop is bought. This video does great help answering my questions.

The 3050 would've been absolutely fine with 1080p even in current titles if they hadn't forced 4gb of vram down everyones' throats. Yeah, heavy stuff would've required you actually tune GFX settings. Nobody does that-everyone just wants to crank all the sliders as high as they go if it dips below 60fps doing it then it's a 'trash gpu.' good review, anyway.

my dell g15 w/ rtx 3050 6gb should run at 95W, but it is common to all of a sudden limit to only 30W.. I've no idea how to prevent that. All C-States are off, everything at full performance mode and still this happens. :(

you forgot the 2 most important things. NOICE and HEAT, the rest is specs that are similar among the pc with the same specs. The way the laptop gets rid of heat is what i focus 90% when I buy the gaming laptop. If the laptop is cool in the wrong rund, the system components stays more efficient and so on.

The sad part is that the makers of laptop focus on them getting thinner and thinner, thus making them more noisy and warm. Why not make them a little bit larger and cool better, making them quieter......

Sorry man. This video was very in depth
However it was overwhelming.
I am not a pc nerd. (No offence). I just about know what rtx is used with and what a cpu is.

Given that this is a breakdown to get more refined info down to our level i hoped you might break down what type of games are the most demanding, less so and least.
Then say which of the components would do well, okay, and poorly.
Then put values on the middle part. I mean 8k is the best you can have. But 4k and 8 are nearly identical and games aren't made for 4k to begin with. So max xpec would be 8k. 95% then 4k.
But 1080p is not 50% even if it technically is about half the resolution.
So that is where i hoped this would go.
Not into all those abbreviations and specs and temperatures and powerdraws and what not.
If i knew what that meant then i wouldn't need this video.

Thanks for making it anyway, but i look forwards to a "for idiots" version

Can someone please help! I will be happy to donate to anyone that can assist. Will either of these laptops work well for this games sys req's?

I am looking to buy a mid level priced/performing laptop under 1K (preferably with 17" screen but not required) to run a game: Magic the Gathering "Arena", and "Magic Online"(MTGO) with decent performance.

The game maker recommends this stats-
Minimum Requirements:
• Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5600+ or Equivalent
• Graphics Card: GeForce GTX 8800 or Equivalent
• RAM: 2 GB
• Operating System: Windows 7
Recommend Requirements:
• Processor: Intel Core2 Quad Q9300 @ 2.50GHz
• Graphics Card: GeForce GTX 560
• RAM: 4 GB
• Operating System: Windows 10

I seem to like these options so far-
*Lenovo 2022 IdeaPad 3 17.3" FHD Travel Laptop, AMD Ryzen 5 5625U, 40GB RAM, 2TB PCle SSD, ‎AMD Radeon Vega 7, 720p Webcam, Fingerprint Reader, ‎Arctic Grey, Win 11 Pro, 32GB SnowBell USB Card $850

*ASUS TUF F17 Gaming Laptop, 17.3" 144Hz FHD IPS-Type Display, Intel Core i5-11400H Processor, GeForce RTX 3050, 8GB DDR4 RAM, 512GB PCIe SSD, Wi-Fi 6, Windows 11 Home, FX706HCB-ES51,Graphite Black $899

*ASUS 2022 TUF A17 17.3" 144Hz FHD Gaming Laptop, AMD Ryzen 5 4600H, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650, RGB Backlit Keyboard, Win 11 Pro, Bonfire Black, 32GB Snowbell USB Card, (32GB | 2TB PCIe SSD)

From what I've gathered
Overall size
Tgp
Cooling
Cpu and gpus Temps
Are what matters the most

But all of these have to be balanced
E.g.
You shouldn't stuff a i7 or i9 and 3080 ti or 4080 ti into a 14" or 16" size and allow it to draw 200 to 280w total

This might give high 85 C to 95+ C cpu/gpu Temps,

Better of with a 17" or 18" size with this same gpu and cpu.

I was looking at an asus g17 2022 model and a g16 2023 model
The 2023 g16 model I found a review on reported high turbo mode gaming cpu and gpu Temps of 94C
It has an
Rtx 4080 ti
16" 165hz 1900x1200 display
Intel i7 cpu
16GB RAM
1TB ROM

I compared this g16 to a g17 from 2022
2022 g17 has a
Ryzen 9 6900hx
Rtx 3070ti
16GB RAM
1TB ROM
17" 360hz 1920X1080 display

This I found reviews that reported ~80C cpu/gpu Temps when gaming

Fair this is only ~15C cooler but I assume going passed 95C is going to cause a good lot of problems in the long term and I assume that high temperature on the 2023 g16 can cause more wear on the components.

The reason why I looked into this g16 is because my local laptop seller had a ~500usd discount on this laptop its current price with discount is ~2500usd or 48000 ZAR
which is the same price as the g17 2022 model I looked into first, I heard that there are alot of screen and power issues with this g16 which made me fairly skeptical.

To be honest i think buying a laptop with medium level graphic cards like 3060,3070,4060,4070 is a better choice because most people buys laptops with these cards so it has a bigger community and bigger community means large number of gamers because of which game developers have to optimize their games for these GPUs, that means you will not face any problem with the performance of the game.
