The Chinese state is wealthy. Not it's people.

Some Spaniards are accused of not being Spanish enough and are treated accordingly — Catalans and Basques, for example.

The 9-9-6 and extreme competition is caused by what Chinese youth calls "involution", where workers try to outdo other workers for rewards, but every worker do it so the bar keeps rising and rising.

There is a movement growing against it in younger generations so it should eventually mellow out

Hard work ethics isn’t 70 years old, it’s part of our 4000+ year old culture. In the west the individual works for itself, in china, the individual works for the family and the country. That’s why in the west kids are encouraged to reach for their dreams, while chinese kids are encouraged to choose what’s best for the future, interest is second. there’s pros and cons to both, but a good way of putting it is, the chinese model has kept the society going for more than 4000 years straight.

As a student majors in economy in China, I totally disagree with the process as "swithing to capitalism" since it's undeniable that the percentage of state-owned corporation in elementary and significant sectors is still extremely high, and meanwhile the predominance of lands by the nation is still in existence, and so forth. It's simply a sort of policies emboding the marketing economy and globalization.

Hard work and discipline stem from China being an agrarian society where any mishap on seeding, tilting, harvesting in scheduled time means life or death. Prioritizing education is cultural, the mostly deep rooted religion since Confucius time over 2000 years ago.

The rest of the positive impact in my view belong to the government leadership after the death of Mao.

Deng Xiaoping is known as the " Architect of Modern China" and I believe he rightly deserves such credit. As for the 'gradualist" vs 'shock-therapy', China is 'lucky' that the gradualists prevailed. America, otoh, has it's own form of 'shock therapy' every four years during and after its presidential elections as each national party seeks power and tries to retain it for another four years. China sails with the wind while America tacks to port and starboard against the wind. Do I favor a one party system like China? No. But, like Deng Xiaoping realized, things can be better...

As a Chinese, as long as I appreciate your acknowledgment of my leaders, I have to say that the best thing my government did was doing nothing and allowing the people to do their business. Now they are trying to manoeuvre the economy again and we are doomed.

I think you missed a crucial factor here - the unique federalist structure that the chinese leaders created. This isn't some "copy the tried-and-tested method" but rather something they invented, where the growth is created at the most local level by intelligently funding the right companies or investing in infrastructure, and the party officials responsible for creating growth are then rewarded by promotions within the party. This incentivizes growth at the most local level, and the systems thus created reinforces intelligent leadership.

Same old far right bullsh!t. Lol if China has developed because of Capitalism, then why hasn't India and many other third world countries that have a far more liberalized economy than China, are still poor in all aspects?

Not even Japan, Singapore and South Korea have the same Neo Liberal policies being propagated by the west. The 4 Asian tigers have an economy that is completely planned and driven by the state. Of course, they say the opposite to the world, but their economies, infrastrictural development, culture and most importantly their politics, are the complete opposite of Neo Liberalism.

Lord, you brought up very briefly Morrissey! Ah, an incredibly painful subject for myself and doubtless countless others. The Smiths are one of, and when I was in my early to mid twenties THE favourite band of mine, and Morrissey.....I can't reconcile the poignant and socially inclusive lyrical bond I felt, which means so much to me still, with an opponent of rights, dignity, justice and universal human rights which he says from his public platform. As a white cisgender Canadian man, I am insulated from indiscriminate acts of injustice and violence. So is he. It's incomprehensible. Abigail, I have gotten so much from Philosophy Tube; respect. Congratulations on everything you've accomplished in your career. There will come a time when cisgender and transgender are just different terms for the same idea of gender equality. Peace

The past few decades have been meteoric but also unsustainable. China is facing a few different reckonenings in part caused by government policies- plummeting birth rates and population loss (one child policy), housing collapse (partly because chinese cant invest in a stock market and instead turn to property pyramid schemes), and a limited amount of possible/worthwhile new megaprojects that have helped to prop up China's GDP figures

"Chinese leaders" is an American way to avoid saying the "Chinese Communist Party". Love your videos but saying China is what it is because of luck and because capitalism is a very biased view. I also noticed ALL of the authors you mentioned are Americans writing about China.

I think there is a minor important factor contributing to the China miracle, which is their 1 party system. Yes, sounds weird to Americans but having 1 party with consistent policy and vision makes China's develop much much faster compared to a democratic multiple parties system. Because it always take a long time for a multiple parties government to agree in anything. When CCP decides they must improve Chinese education and infrastructure at all cost, they will do everything to do that, and consistently for 5-10 or more years. In single party countries like China or Vietnam the governments tend to plan for 5-10 years with vision for 20 years ahead while it's very hard to do so in countries having constantly changing ruling parties like the US.
