In this video I talk about the importance of researching your documentary film and how to find characters.

The process of finding out what you want to make is messy but there's one key piece of research you've got to be able to answer: who is your character?

If your documentary doesn’t have a person at its heart then it’ll have no heart. You’re looking for a person who’s living the drama you want to capture. That’s the most important thing.

This character will ground your story in the here and now and give you a focus and a perspective through which to view the world. Without it, you'll get into the same trouble I did.
