When you said the category to ‘stare at a wall’ I immediately said my dark Vanessa. I’m doing a predictions game with this video I’m not gonna lie. Also I’m doing my NEA for my literature a level on my dark vanessa and the goblin market (it’s one of my favourite books of all time)

Can you recommend me some books that are similar to The Picture of Dorian Gray? In a sense of good character development, beautiful & poetic writing style, dark gothic

Fun fact: Someone once gifted me Cioran's "The Trouble with Being Born." She said she knew nothing about the book; the title just made her think of me.

I haven’t read queens gambit but I gotta admit I soooo was hoping you’d say stranger in a strange land. As someone with autism that book made me feel so less alone in the world. (Shyly chuckles) I know he isn’t technically autistic but… well that’s how I read it at least.

A protagonist we’re supposed to hate but love was Alex in A Clockwork Orange. Especially the proper 21 chapter British edition in where the experiment also doesn’t work but Alex gives up his old habits by the process of maturing. Still keeping with the intention of advocating free will over well-meaning control, while sticking close to reality the propensity to criminality greatly reducing by the early 20s. .

i LOVED the secret history and i highly recommend if we were villains by m l rio for anyone who liked it! it follows a group of students at an arts school who perform shakespeare and its soooo good (and for english literature lovers, the way the boundaries between prose and verse are obscured really emphasise the motif of the transgression of the stage into reality, transgressions of morality etcetera) arguably i preferred it to the secret history but it’s phenomenal!

Feminist, hot, smart, male manipulator book: Suzanne by Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette (English translation of La femme qui fuit). The author hired a PI to retrace the life of her grandmother (the eponymous Suzanne) through the 50s, 60s and 70s. The info the PI found inspired this novel, written almost as a letter from the author to her grandmother. The story takes place through multiple historical events across many places, from Montreal to Harlem to Louisiana and more. If you’re looking for a book about the female condition, familial ties and personal freedom, with a complex, flawed and unique protagonist, with a voice specific to places and a history that you may not be familiar with (Quebec specifically), I cannot recommend this book enough! If you can read French, I recommend you read the original version, but the translation has won prestigious prizes for how well it has been translated😇
