Japan was fighting on multiple fronts and thus over extended their armed forces and resources. China was their oldest and most constant enemy in the conflict meaning they tied down numerous Japanese forces away from the Western Allies. Japan attacked Malaysia an hour before Pearl Harbour so technically they declared war on the British Empire first before the U.S.

Growing up here in the States, the narrative regarding the final capitulation of the Japanese Empire, was very heavily focused upon the Atomic Bomb factor. That it was the bombs being primarily responsible for forcing the Japanese to finally see the futility of further resistance. But as I grew older, and studied the War more in depth, I really saw how that assessment was not only erroneous, but also unfair to the efforts of the Russians. What finally made it abundantly clear to the Japanese that they had lost the War, was the one-two punch of both the A-bombs and the Soviets. In fact, in some sources and historian’s view, it was the Soviets who the Japanese were dreading the most; making them downright despondent once the Red Army dam had broken.

The US in WW2 was so strong at the cheat level that it was a dead end once we made them our enemy.

Very astute to show how Japanese overreaction to the Doolittle Raid damaged Japan at a critical time. The Doolittle Raid was one of the most successful small operations in history. Also astute to show how in 1944 the Japanese strategy in China shifted in a way that benefited the Chinese Communists. Also correct to show how the Japanese merchant shipping crunch drove grand strategy. This shortage of shipping began totally unexpectedly for Japan in the spring of 1940 when Germany attacked Denmark, Norway, and the Netherlands, three of the world's major commercial shippers, all of which then for an obvious reason ceased to carry for Japanese customers. This caused Japan logistical stress for the rest of the war.

I think the defense of hengyang deserves more spotlight! 16,000 chinese soldiers stopped the advance of 110,000 japanese soldiers for over 1 month! The division suffered 95%+ casualties. With over 80%+ of the division being killed. Their sacrifice bought precious time for the chinese forces to regroup.

China was not industrialized at the time, weak and plagued by internal strife. It wasn’t until 1950s under the Sino Soviet agreement, heavy industries were established. Had China had closer cooperation with the US during WWII. History would’ve turned out very differently. Unfortunately, communists took over in the subsequent civil war and China immediately fought US in the Korean War. Had there been a land supply route to even receive 5% of what Soviet had received, Chinese public would have looked towards US for a post war future and not that backward Communist regime.
