Its the same method theyve used generationally. Look out U.S. as theyre preparing to do this here, too. "Like a bush, let it grow wild until it looks ugly then hack it down to nubs and let it start again to make sustainable, strong structure underneath." God is a shepherd but he is also a gardener of humanity.

This was refreshingly in touch with reality. I can't believe the mainstream media who saw Jack Ma say he should essentially just be able to issue as much credit as he wanted and that the regulators are stupid were like "he's being persecuted by the evil governmen for no reason, it's totally political and unfounded and because he called Xi Jinping fat!". Jack Ma was unhinged. Any semi-functioning government would be aggressively auditing you if you said what he said and were in control of a large financial institution.

Don't forget, behind those tall flashy buildings, megacities empty or otherwise, pretend-to-care privacy laws, crazy instagram tourist attractions, government-approved TikTok algorithm suggestions glorifying China and shitting on the USA, and the image of a "perfect society"... is a corrupt dictatorship desperately clinging to power to stay alive. Dictator Xi (aka Winnie the Pooh) did this because the companies became too big and threatened his power. That's all this is. China has never cracked down on any industry for silly things like human rights violations, workers rights, or privacy before or since.

TLDR: China’s tech giants started becoming hypercapitalistic predatory bloodsuckers preying on the average Chinese people so China’s government stepped in to put a stop to that

Honestly it’s impressive how a supposed “evil dictatorship” in China does a much better job of siding with the common people than the so called democratic governments in the “free world”

Agree that the crackdown on China's tech giants is mainly to control and influence the economy and internet-related politics. But as a Chinese and an employee on Internet companies, I disagree that this series of actions is aimed at building a society with more common property and higher quality of education, it didn't share fortune to private companies or normal people, instead this strategy take it to the national companies; it didn't give poor people fair opportunities to learn, instead it forbid tutorial classes once and for all, even learning English is much more difficult since the government policy.

By mentioning these facts, I want to make it clear that the Chinese policy retreat is significant. It shows that we are regrettably returning to the time of Mao.

Seems a lot of people are missing the point like @futureshocked , etc.. The CCP doesn't care to much for corruption as long as you give your money to the right people. When you think about it, its very similar to North Korea.... These crackdowns happened whilst the political ones where ending. This was purely to solidify the power position of Xi Jinping and his cohorts. Nothing more and nothing less.

i feel like the US needs to crack down on its tech sector too. lots of the problems in the comments that ended in the early 2020s for chinas internet economy are just the norm in America. These tech giants are killing our democracy. Monopoly and Democracy are incompatable, at a certain point the only thing you can buy to expand is to senators.

There also a important information you forgot on Ant group. They were practicing financial crimes similar to what Lehman brothers did in 2008. In another word, China potentially stopped an economic crisis by itself.

No its because the CCP us extremely uncoordinated and disjointed and decision making. Everything they do has been reactionary, and/or as retaliation because they're not getting their cut. There is no way the current regime prefers "growth quality" because Pooh Bear is a Maoist. Yes that "more labour = cheap labour" Mao. Quality of growth means decentralization of wealth, which is the antithesis of the current regime. Also why they're hesitant on moving to consumption-based economy as a method to save their current predicament.

When Trump's accounts are banned by FB, Twitter...I thought the Chinese tech giants will be destroyed one day, very soon it just started just several days after that...The tech giants got too much social power, that can affect a country's politics and should not be controlled by a person or a company...

What China did to the after school English tutoring industry is almost beyond comprehension for most Americans: the idea that government might choose good health and quality of life for its people at the cost of economic growth is completely alien for people in the US. I worked in after-school education, for a startup company under the umbrella of a behemoth called New Oriental, from 2011-2013. Four year old children were routinely taking four or five hours of classes after their regular school day was done. The kids would finish up at 9 PM, get to bed around 11 or even midnight, and then go back to school the next day.

I remember one mother in tears as she gave a speech at one of our kindergarten graduations, talking about how she knew her five-year-old was exhausted, how much she hated seeing the dark circles under her eyes, but how she felt compelled to push her because of how insanely competitive the education system is over there. Essentially: everyone had to be taking afterschool classes, because everyone else was taking afterschool classes. The mother felt like she had no choice, if she wasn't pushing her daughter to the brink, she was being a bad mother. I loved working at that job, the kids were great and the people were awesome, and I loved living in Beijing on a good salary. But now that I'm older and wiser, I applaud the Chinese government for what it did. Never in a million years would the US government hurt its GDP to improve the lives of its young people.

Good short powerful docu. So much to unpack here.

Supreme court will always lose (corruption), no matter the verdict, so they chose to declare everybody not guilty. Easy way out.

Quality over quantity was a nice excuse when they cracked down on Big Tech and other "fast growth economy" companies. Yet the fast growth of technologies which suits the government - to increase their control over individuals - has increased instead!

Again, fast growth, steep rising GDP is supposedly traded for quality, yet they demand 70 hour workweek for people. More hypocriete anyone?

Pretty sure the government showed mister Ma one of their dungeons. That's why he suddenly always agrees with government policy.
