I came in expecting “video games are bad for you”, spent 30 minutes waiting for “even though there are good effects, they cause these bad effects”, then finished with a healthy dose of confirmation bias. Nice! 😅

I get the point of the video, but the problem is that nobody really plays video games for an hour or two.. Many adults and teenagers spent 5 or 6 hours a day just playing it and they become strongly addictive to it.. The possitive effects you are talking about are miserable to negative ones such as attention and focus problems. The worst thing is that when you are addicted to some videogame you are thinking about it 24/7 , it’s horrible for the brain.

When I was around 16 years old, I used to play the original Doom (for Snes and PC) but very frequently I had nightmares that I couldn't escape corridors. Sure, my logical thinking got boosted, I even became a programmer because of games, but I wouldn't let my young kid play the way I used to, fearing for his psychological sensitivity. If you want me to be honest, sometimes even now as a 40 years old, I still have flashbacks (especially from horror first person) and I regret playing more than I should have. I don't understand all, but that's one of the risks of the excesses.

The worst thing for me is what I get dragged into what influences me while gaming. 41 years old married one son nice home my own small business I do actually very well with various comforts at home that said iv started playing the new CALL OF DUTY online particularly DMZ iv started swearing reacting to hateful people on that game I usually don't swear like that I'm a Christian my faith is everything! Also spending most nights online on my holiday atm I'm on till 6am! Wake up 11am and on again by 12pm! I can feel a big shift in attitude and especially my swearing not spending valuable time in prayer or with my family. Seeing my son on his ps5 I brought for his Xmas gift all day literally! I'm over it!! Gota stop that trend so today there will be no gaming atall!

I had a brain injury, and one of the side effects was that it was almost impossible for me to navigate. I used to be extremely good at navigating but lost that ability. Anyways, some years later I began playing escape from Tarkov, where you are dropped into a massive map with dozens of hostile players and deadly ai, and no map or indication of where you are. Your survival hinges on your ability to figure out where you are and navigate quickly in the back of your mind while keeping an eye out for enemies that are usually very hard to see. On top of the benefits she listed, my navigation has improved incredibly, both in game and irl. It seems like gaming has a huge stigma that people insist on, even though multitudes of people can attest to it helping in many ways.

There's another side to the argument. If kids are not doing their homework, reading and learning something and playing videogames all afternoons and weekends (almost the whole weekend), then they're not learning and not socializing. There's a huge downside. I'm not suggesting that games should be banned. A position of neutrality is wiser. That said, Lego and Meccano were far better ways to play. Perhaps, TED talks can find a brain scientists that receives funding from the Lego and Meccano people to promote the effects those toys have on the brain.

Appearance without substance. Everything is a hallucination. So this moment right now is a hallucination. It's always been a hallucination. That's what reality is. In psychology hallucination means perception without any input or data. So traditionally if you go to a mental hospital and you're telling them that you're seeing video games running around with stripes and polka dots, they'll say you're hallucinating.

the main problem i find with video games is their addicting nature (speaking from experiance sadly) that is mainly created by the often greedy publishing parts of game develepment.
this makes for a dopomin overload, casing harm to us in the from of self neglect often. or using the harmfull sides of gambaling aka loot boxes.
mainly games like MMO's tend to use a lot of harmful tactics in this to the end of making money.

we need ways to be able to limied our selfs and that promote healty gaming styles rather then addiction styles of obbsesion style play.
games where we can learn things in a safe envioment that in turn have real world aplications.

Well presented discussion on some of the positive elements of gaming. However, most people who drink, drink too much and thus negate the positive effects of alcohol, and I think the same can be said for gaming. It would be interesting to see her results compare to doing sports.

Many people around the world are engaged in (video) gaming and gambling behaviours ,which are recognized as addictive behaviours, but usually do not result in any significant health consequences. However, a small proportion of people engaged in such behaviours may develop disorders due to addictive behaviours associated with functional impairment or distress.

Video gaming is highly prevalent in modern culture, particularly among young people, and a healthy hobby for most users. However, in recent years there has been increasing global recognition among public health professionals and academics that particular patterns of video gaming may lead to marked impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational or other important areas of functioning and psychological distress for a significant minority of players. People who partake in gaming should be alert to the amount of time they spend on gaming activities, particularly when it is to the exclusion of other daily activities, as well as to any changes in their physical or psychological health and social functioning that could be attributed to their pattern of gaming behaviour.

Gambling in many countries and jurisdictions is considered a form of entertainment, characterized by betting/wagering mechanics and monetization features. Like gaming, repetitive gambling behaviour can potentially lead to gambling disorder associated with distress or impairment.

In recent years, there has been an increasing convergence between gaming and gambling on various platforms, significantly aided by the Internet. This convergence may give rise to migration from games to gambling and co- occurrence of the two disorders.

wow, very good video. But I have been in the IT and video games for over 25 years. When 3d simulations and first person shooters came out (the good quality ones) I watched my ability to AIM went through the roof. About 15 years ago, the american military did a study on the benefits of 3d games, and found, it actually reduced "war shock" and helped people suppress negative stress, and showed, that people who played 3d games, helped them make better decisions.
