I too, am a member of the Tweed Brotherhood. I don't have a 5E3, but I have the 5E9. That's the Tremolux. It does exactly the same things that yours is doing, with the addition of the early style tremolo. There's no opto coupler, it changes the bias of the inverter, and it's vastly different from the later trems. It's more like riding the volume knob rather than the "on-off" kind of sound you get with black and silver face models.
Leo Fender should have gotten the Nobel Prize for amp design. Every one of those things, from the Champ, up to the Bassman or the twin, are spectacular.
The only Tweeds that I don't instantly love are the ones that need work, and when that's done, they join the family as members in good standing. They are among some of the finest products that this country has ever produced. I can't imagine how anybody could be a guitar player and not want one.
Thanks for posting, I've known about all of the Tweed voodoo for many moons, but it was fun watching you go through the moves with yours. Your enthusiasm made this fun to watch, and besides, you're a hell of a player.
You got lotsa heart brother!

Enough that I don't want to deal with this kind of amp. I want something I can adjust intuitively. :D

To all conserned, no fender deluxe or any tweed ever had the kind of distortion that the new remake's, kits, what have you are being pumped out now. This stomp box sound is bullshit. Fenders have always broke up in those early amps in a smooth compression to full out overdrive, unless they were defective. And why the 57 is being pushed as the deluxe of choice today, who knows. I've always been a fan of the 53, but that's what I personally was able to borrow and it's point of cream was from when you could hear it and just got better at 10. Not a harsh clump of mold in that half and half cream. Think what you want, but when the 48 dual professional came out at $35,000.98cents plus tax came out it makes me sick to see 2 pedals on it. I'm joking sarcastically about the 98 cent's, but next time you see a demonstration, count the pedals and mic's in front of these amps and who's showing off more the player or the amp. Alex

alright dude that intro was completely insane. first off the clean tone was sick, then you turn one volume DOWN and it gets more cranked. I've known this circuit is a bit unique bit I didn't know that you turned DOWN the other channel to get it to be cleaner. The fuzz sound at the end is what totally sold me. I gotta get me one of these. Gonna get a clone off ebay, think that's a good idea or should i build it myself with a kit?? does it matter?

also your playing was super dope! cool sounding, clean and unique.

Nicely done! I've owned & gigged with an original '58 5E3 since 1979. Lemme clarify - the normal channel was originally intended for hiZ microphones and used a 12AY7 instead of a 12AX7 for the input stage. To my ear the AY7 offers a bit more "breath" in the 5E3's tone

how loud is the amp???,, the speaker that comes with the amp is a 35 ounce ceramic magnet speaker with an american cone.. and specified with a sensitivity of 99 dB pr watt.. so should be rather loud even with just 12 watts of clean power...

Best 5E3 tutorial I've seen so far. No wonder Niel Young went so deep into this amp to figure out his fave presets. An amazing blend of clean, grit and dirt in a fairly complex blending of what seems like should be 3 simple controls!

I wonder why Ryra Amplifiers chose to go with a notoriously clean ceramic (Jupiter brand) speaker, rather than the traditional alnico that is typically used in 5E3 amps? That's a puzzle to me?

What a great little video! Extremely insightful and helpful with respect to the many nuances hidden beneath these few interactive controls, but unfortunately, the performance and tonal gap between the original Fender Deluxe Tweed and the plethora of boutique 5E3 knock-offs (like the Ryra Elegante), is of 'cosmic' proportion! They are as profoundly different as z-gener's and Boomers, or water and oil. Some use alnico, some use ceramic, etc., etc. Its a veritable minefield. My own hand-wired Fender '57 Custom Deluxe, and its various controls, does NOT behave anywhere NEAR what this little boutique Ryra does. Its literally, apples and oranges. Citing just one example, I need to use an Aracom PRX-150 attenuator with mine, just to get any sort of borderline break-up, or I'd blow the freakin' windows outta the place!

Great job, you covered it all except the "Throwing it off a cliff" test. You hammered that amp good and proper and it did'nt flinch once! I played a similar heavy handed style once through an expensive super modern "Built like a tank" combo at a recording session and the thing began to melt and fill the air with smoke, the funny thing is the owner was'nt upset at all as she opened a cabinet and pulled out an old "Champ" which had been retired cos it was too basic and old fashioned according to the company that sold her the combo with bells and whistles, stereo chorus, complex eq, in/out , 2x10 speakers but it did'nt like dynamics( more like a hifi) so if you played the same way all the time softly it was happy and sounded good but as soon as you changed the attack it would groan and make some really weird sci-fi sounds like it was possesed and eventually it just became a carcass for spare bits. The Champ just keeps getting better the more you use it. Thanks again for the viddy

Great video! This is legit the best amp review and demo video that I've seen so far. The "how too" and instructional aspects of how to get certain tones is so helpful. a observation and suggestion - if you branded your channel explicitly as an "amp channel" and started doing regular amp reviews (classic amps and new ones), you'd be hitting a key nitch that people are hungry for. I think you'd quickly grow this into one of the biggest music channels. just thought. Anyhow, great work man.

Because it is so interactive the 5E3 tweed has several sweet spots. The issue w the circuit has always been the limitations in the interaction between players in a rock band, say a loud drummer. You would like the tweed to be in a certain sweet spot but the loud drummer or other guitar player w a more robust amp will just drown you out. The tweed's saturation will just limit its use no matter how glorious the sound. Less an issue w the bigger tweeds like the (super) Twin and of course the Bassman that have sufficient clean power in a rock band setting. Some will go brownface but they are closer to blackface than tweed. Players who use the 5E3 often take another amp to keep the low cleans solid. If you have a good soundman he might be able to feedback some of the 5E3 through monitors but that is not ideal. So, all in all the 5E3 might work but it really depends on circumstances. The 2 amp scenario works really well btw, a juicy 5E3 and a clean solid state amp/speaker combi.Sweeeeet..

I have mixed feelings about this amp. I've own two amps, both clones I meticulously built (a 5F11 57' Vibrolux clone and the 59' 5E3 Deluxe). The vibrolux gets the most love. Its more straightforward and kind of a hybrid between the tweed and brown sounds. Beautiful amp. Easy and intuitive controls but never gets super raunchy like the 5E3. I use it with pedals and feel at home with it. The 5E3 is challenging. It takes a lot of tweaking to get a good sound. Jay sounded incredible in this video playing it and he clearly knows how to coax great tones from it because he's an awesome player. I will say I think the 5E3 separates mediocre players like myself from the greats. It requires a certain finesse and a lot of interaction to get the best tones out of it. If someone is looking to only own one amp I don't think this is the greatest candidate for that. If you already have a good pedal platform amp and are looking for something more expressive that will challenge you and make you a better player the Deluxe is a great choice.

Interesting to me; the full-up sound demonstrates exactly the sound I have never, ever wanted my guitar to sound like. 🙂
I've never found fuzz to be appealing since it most surely removes all nuance and complexity of the harmonic tones a great amp delivers.
And 'sag' I eliminate in all my amp designs by using truly capable (solid-state diode) rectifier circuits. I still can't figure out why some players think that the amp sounding like the tone is being squished is a good thing. Lots of players enjoy those things. That's fine. But for me, I can't fathom what is supposed to be good about it.
That said, there are quite a few really pretty, and some fun and potent tones demonstrated here where the amp is singing, not sounding like it's puking. 🙂
Very nice demo of the scope of what this circuit can do.

So how do these amps react when you jumper the two channels? The way the two channels interact with each other regardless of what channel is used probably suggests jumping channels wouldn’t work the same as on say an old Marshall and some other Fenders.

Stellar review as usual, @JayLeonardJ. Love your enthusiasm and killer chops! This video is so important for people interested in the Tweed Deluxe. There is a much older YT video out there where @RecProAudio just shows the knobs/panel and talks about the interactivity of the knobs and the ability to get a much broader range of clean tones. Had I not seen that, I would have stupidly sold my Tweed Deluxe due to falsely believing that it can't do any good cleans. But thanks to that video (and this one!), since then it has been total bliss and lifelong learning with with this amp. Thanks for the game changing tips!

Low volume on bright input and it seems the ‘channels’ aren’t talking to each other.
