This is the thing: With these kinds of debates I always feel like this:
1- One person says, the grass is green.
2- The other person responds, I disagree with you because the grass is really green!
You know what I’m saying?
I’m a cradle Catholic and my husband is free Evangelical.
One day we were discussing the true presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. He says to me, that’s not what saves us. What saves us is the blood and body of Christ!😮What??? I just couldn’t stop laughing! Didn’t I just say that?
The lady is saying works are not important. I would say, define works. Than she says works are a result of faith.
Well how in the world do you think we can show our faith to Jesus?
Of course they are super important!
Simple as this: Jesus said to the apostles: What you bind in Earth it will be bound in Heaven, What you lose in Earth will be lost in Heaven. They instituted the Eucharist and all other sacraments according to early Church Historians like Justin Martyr. That’s enough for me, and Martin Luther can say whatever he wants. His teachings were not approved by the council of Trent.

Embracing Calvinist soteriology does not make you Calvinist or reformed. She's a conservative, thoroughly baptist evangelical. Nothing wrong with that. But the Reformed traditions are Presbyterianism, Lutheranism, Episcopal/Anglican, Dutch Reformed, and a few others. Baptists are not Calvinist.

Allies defense makes so much more sense. George goes on a rambling speech about infallibility and never answers the question about the pope. The bible is the final authority- not the pope. The Holy spirit reveals the truth - not a pope or priest.
I was a catholic for years and could not quote one scripture. 99% of catholics I know and have known have no knowledge of whats actually in the bible. I appreciate my catholic friends, but the word of God is enough. Jesus is enough.

I was raised as a protestant, my mother and some of my sisters and brothers are still following this religion, and now I don't follow any religion, intact I'm very anti-religious (i have my debates and reasons, right for free opinion on this subject).

BUT, I respect 100% people who believe and follow religious mythology.

My mother went throught a lot of inhuman and brutal situations in life as a single mother of 6 children after my father passed away at age of 43, and the only thing that kept my mother safe and sane after all the traumas and abuse she had to endure over and over again, was her faith and belief in God,... that was her safety belt... she needed to believe and hold onto God and Bible, something higher and more powerful than human nature and force inexchange to not collapse under all the physical and mental abuse she had to endure.

I do believe in God and I have my own personal way of believing and maintaining a connection with God, but I am very against religious organizations!! Every type of religious organizations!!! It can be Catolic, protestant, Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddha and what not... in my opinion these religious instructions and and organizations are all cults and designed to segregate and create conflicts between people!

I don't think my relationship with god should be anybody's busyness!

I never once said anything negative about my mom religious way of living, I almost never express my hard feelings about religious cults.

They do what they want, manipulate and abuse the vulnerable the way they want (although it saddens me deeply), i never attack them, or proactively call them out on their horrible way of treating children and the most vulnerable!

And I don't appreciate when religious people call me out and attack me for my own personal choice!
I just keep myself veeeeery very far away from religious people and institutions! Because I know exactly what's going on in these organizations, and it sickens me to the core! 🤮🤮🤮🤮

I literally was catholic and became christian BECAUSE of the catholic inconsistencies! They miss out on a lot of scripture (even tho they have more books! They dont even know how to be saved! They think they have to do a buncha sacraments! They dont know if theyre going to heaven or hell because it always depends! Like guys i get it u reverted, however, what catholithism teaches contradicts the bible, and with that I cant and wont support it. Especially the saints thing and mother mary being a virgin forever, (the bible says they didnt have intercourse until jesus was born! Meaning she wasnt forever a virgin!) blasphemous to call all those sinners who you call saints holy. Esp when the bible says the only one able to intercede is jesus! Not mary, not saints never does the bible say any of that! And that catholic pledge they do in churches, „i believe in x idologies“ comes off cultlike. The bible says dont make promises but let ur words count.

I used to be Protestant: “one saved always saved, sola scriptura” Christian. Went through a major conversion to the Catholic Faith and my mind was blown. Just google who started the Catholic Church, vs who started baptist, pentacostalism, and how non-denom began…This one question led me to the fullness of the truth and the “source and summit”of our faith.

Concerning the thought about whether people went to heaven before Martin Luther or not is irrelevant. It’s not our decision who makes it and who doesn’t. Not being rude just factual. The only salvific message we should concern ourselves with is the Bible. What did the book of Acts teach doctrinally because that was the church’s foundation. As far as I am concerned and from what I can tell as far as scripture is concerned both the Catholic Church and the greater Protestant movement have both missed it. Let’s not get hung up on emotions concerning who was or wasn’t saved, let’s go back to the Bible.

I just watched this video very recently and it’s really amazing to hear arguments from both sides. I was born and raised as Catholic and is now an active follower of Christ through Baptist way of teachings. The only conversion that happened to me was from a believer to a true believer of Christ. Not, being Catholic to being Baptist.

God bless, everyone.

It will be interesting to see Allie debate with Scott Hahn or Trent Horn. Both are Catholic converts from Evangelical to Catholicism. Catholics do not worship Mary but venerate as the first follower of Jesus as she said her "fiat" to God and carry Jesus to humanity. As all of us have a mother, Mary is our spiritual mother. If we don't consider her in the faith, we are all spiritual orphans.

Its not a matter of 'hang-ups' about the catholic church, as you call it, Candace. Its about truth with a capital T. so much of what the catholic church does is contrary to sound biblical teaching. I am so so glad that God set me free from its shackles of religious idolatry! Its so disingenuous to say that the bible doesnt say anywhere sola scriptura. Lets start from the fact that the bible does not say anywhere that a human institution in Rome, governed by carnal men can have an equal authority to the word of God. That is perverse!

It comes down to a choice: traditions of men or the holy word of God. When those traditions go against the word of God, you need to choose the word. That's what protestantism is all about.

Allie Beth Stuckey, please do not use Martin Luther to justify/corroborate your theology. Your theology is radically different from Luther. Calvin and Luther suffered in a lot of theology. In fact, most of its theology appears closer to Catholicism than your theology.

I am a cradle Catholic. I grew up going to mass every Sunday, and I completed my First Communion and Confirmation without thinking too much about what I was being taught. As a teenager, Catholicism was a set of "guidelines" for me to be a good person, and I knew very little about the gospel beyond the basic bible stories.

I can't blame anyone for the ignorance I developed, and there were other people like me in my church. Catholicism was embedded into my culture and community. I thought that if I ever had questions about my faith, I could simply ask Deacon Dave or Fr. Sean. In my early twenties, I had a tough time, and I sadly bought into a lot of secular ideas that I don't think I would have bought into if I had a stronger understanding of the gospel.

I'm older now and I make it a point to set aside a part of my day to teach myself about my faith. I know that there are people in my church who are as ignorant about the gospel as I once was, and I wish that we Catholics would do a better job at educating our parishioners. In my opinion, the Protestants do a better job at this than we do.

At a more fundamental level, the Catholic and Protestant views put forward here are the same because they are based on the belief that there is ontological separation between God and creation. These two are arguing about whose description of separation is correct (though they pretty much agree on that point because they are both western Christians) and whose “way“ will bridge that gap and lead them to God. The truth is, there is no separation between God and creation. Jesus Christ bridged that gap once for all, past, present, and future. And we are not required to move 1 inch toward God because Jesus Christ, God’s Son, brought his Father all the way to us. That is truly good news. And that good news will change your life.
