Baldurs Gate 3 Guide: The 5 ½ Best Cantrips You Should Be Using

I've been playing BG3 a ton, already past the 50hour mark, so I'll be making a lot of videos about it. Which class has been your favorite so far?

The primary benefit of firebolt is that it blows up firebarrels and lights oil slicks and grease slicks on fire. The secondary benefit is that it lights sconces, at range.
The primary benefit of ray of frost is that it extinguishes area fires, and creates ice-slick on puddles which function like the grease spell.

Worth noting: Ray of Frost and Shocking Grasp cantrips do double damage to enemies who are wet, allowing them to surpass Fire Bolt. (Shocking Grasp also has advantage if the enemy is wearing metal armor)

How about minor illusion?

Ray of Frost is extremely usefull: can interact with the surface so it can put out fires or convert wet surfaces into ice. Also deals twice the damage against wet targets, so it is better than firebolt imo (also cold dmg type > fire dmg type as it is harder to find enemies resistent to cold dmg).

Ray of frost is way better than firebolt: it deal 1 less damage on average (4.5 vs 5.5) but have a lot more utility; (EDIT: oh and if the target is wet, it take 2 time the damage from Ray of frost, beating firebolt by a mile.)
like you said it can slow the target BUT it will also make any water or blood surface near the target freeze which will force the target to make a saving throw or fall prone; any enemy that have been already hit will have some blood around him so he will potentially fall prone.
Prone = until it get up advantage on attack roll made from less than 3m, no reaction, disadvantage on str and dex save and when it's his turn, half mvt to get up.
Firebolt also can have some utility (to blow up some stuff) but there is some other easy way to do that (with a range weapon diped in fire for example) and more often than not it's a bad thing to blow up stuff (your other characters might be caught in it, you dont want to blow your grease and loose it's effect, etc).
Idealy I like to have both, but 90% of the time I will use Ray of Frost over Firebolt. Hell I even take Bone chill and Shocking Grasp before firebolt (Bone Chill negate healing can be really usefull against some enemies and showking grasp preventing reaction can save your caster).
The difference in damage is negligible compared to the utility (yes even if it goes up to 2 damage difference at level 5)
