the professor i work for (and have taken five classes with lol) is the best. first day of class, "this is this textbook with the required reading, you can buy it from the university bookstore, I found some copies online, also I looked it up and there's a PDF on google. ANYWAY-"
she's the best, also had us pirate grave of the fireflies for a class, she's had me scan several books for her. what an icon

I had a professor who was teaching us Intro to Business Management of all things. Freshman level course. During the first day he introduced himself as "an author" first. He said that he had written well selling books about business. I swear to God he wrote his own book, for the class, and it was $120. Completely required for the class. I almost leaped out of my chair and gave him the ole razzle dazzle.

Day one: "Anyway here's the pdf for free the first chapter will be reviewed in 4 months"

My trade school teacher was like yeah this is the book you'll need, been out of print for some years now, some issues between the family of the author and the editorial, so we will xerox my book and make copies for everyone....

AbeBooks. My teacher taught me that lifehack. It's a backdoor for teachers to get textbooks cheaply. It's strangely fairly unknown to many students. Got a 100$ textbook for like, 15$.
Not an ad, I swear.

culture shock was being in uni in my country (chile) where profs would share a google drive folder with every pdf for every single class and then doing an exchange program in france and profs expecting me to spend money on books when i'd already learn how to pirate everything lmao

I had multiple professors assign readings from books they wrote, only the specific chapters were always provided for free, and nobody actually read who the author was for the first few readings, so it somehow was a big surprise to us.
All the books I had to buy and couldn’t find a copy online were books other people had written, although at least none of them were profiting off of it. Shout out to the one professor who just gave us a link to an anarchist archive of works for a cartography class, that made things easy.

One of my favorite professors sent out one of those "I hope no one uses an easily available pdf wink wink" email and even went as far as to stop me as I was leaving class and to say "Hi, the student you are sitting next to does not speak English as a first language and thinks I was sincere about the pdf thing. Please inform her that I would actually prefer she does use the pdf and try to do so out of earshot of an administrator"

I was radicalized as a teen when my college professor told me she went to school for free, her books were often a dollar as a formality, and that even though she wrote the book the publisher still won't let her officially recommend older editions.

I helped her go through the changes in each version and what sections got retitled to. They really make an effort the last like 10 years to make sure reprints really f*ck up the page numbers, so going by topic allows for people to buy the $5 textbook instead of take out a credit card price

Had a prof that wrote the textbook we used in class. He had it memorized to the point where he looked at the page at the beginning of each class and didn’t look down at the book the rest of the class and he recited it almost word for word. The creepy part was he also turned the pages at the correct point without looking at the book.

I've had teachers that expect you to turn your camera on during the pandemic at 0730.
I've had teachers that wrote the 130$ textbook that they themselves wrote that we only ever necessarily used on one or two occasions.
I've had professors that list in the rules that you have to be looking physically at your camera at all times and have to be dressed according to their expectations... again, at home at 0730.
I've had professors that tout woke agenda of inclusivity and neurodiversity while at the same time excluding students who have particular needs because "They can't keep up," and "this field won't be right for them."
All this while I spent 15k a semester while living in poverty in a fifth-wheel trailer home with multiple serious mental illnesses...

Professors are low-lifes...
