The evilest institution the world has even seen is continuously given the benefit of the doubt and allowed to rewrite history to make themselves look they've never done a crime in their existence! They are clearly doing it today by writing their history with the nazis in WW II.

Well for sure that list is long. Can we also have an accounting from atheist organizations while we are at it? Because there are very few cultures that go out of their way to explicitly announce that they are "atheist" or "materialist" and those are the communist countries. Presumably they base their morality on something besides religion. But as a matter of historical fact, compared to the atheist communists, the Catholics are just choir boys.

The real question is “how can you be moral when you are religious?”

The fidgeting of the cardinal while Hitchens was speaking was a telling. It seemed to me that he was ashamed to be at the table in front of everyone.

it is impossible to even try to counter the bulldozer of Hitchens' logic and knowledge. the parasite (ahem, Cardinal, for he wears the robes as a Kevlar vest against the incoming 16" artillery shells from Hitchens, as if it would protect him) sits, there, arms crossed (body language that says: "i hear you, but i'm not listening", same as Trump ). sadly, he's gone, and inmates run the asylum.

I agree with my fellow commentators, an intellect lost but not forgotten.

The scale of damage that this institution has done to the human species cannot be overstated, nor can it be measured. The cover ups and perpetration of abuse against the child population alone has far reaching and timeless consequences which will never be known in full and never healed. There's not a single good that cannot be done without the existence of the catholic church.

What is the relationship between the audience giggling about crimes against women, which is half the human race, and the fact that the same audience is not outraged at the Catholic church. I think I just answered that question.

The thing that amazes me most about this debate was that Anne Widdicombe was there as a serious intellectual contender to Fry and Hitchens (we'll exclude from comparison the lost and deluded religious figure) ... I guess she represents the addled and confused in society ... for balance.

It’s my experience that the catholic church is the embodiment of all that is evil in the world. I spend a considerable part of my professional life prosecuting their vile clergy for the rape of innocent children and other heinous crimes against the most vulnerable in our society. Ironically their cult describes my wife and I as “morally evil individuals” simply because we are homosexual. They make entirely empty threats against us because we, as well educated, free thinking people choose to be atheist.

Selecting a deeply ignorant and socially backwards Nigerian and the particularly antagonistic Anne Widdicombe to defend them in front of an educated, Western European audience was extremely unwise and it was reassuring to see them pay the price of their foolish choice.

If I had enough money to live on for the rest of my life, I wouldn’t spend my days jetting off to the Caribbean or buying flash cars, I would use my spare time to memorise this speech word for word.

I take great issue with Hitchens addressing the man as 'your grace'. The proper title is "your disgrace".

I can't imagine what the carpenter from Galilee and his friend Peter would think if they woke up in the Vatican city??? They would think they had arrived in Hell amongst gold and marble monstrosities built in the name of his friend Peter? How many millions of children could have been saved on the money that has been spent building this abhorrent city??? That's not a relgion, it is man made opulence in the name of Peter.

It is a great shame such a man of masterful eloquence was never afraid to speak the truth and shame and expose further crimes of the Catholic Church has died.
It is admirable though, that figures like Stephen Fry and Professor Richard Dawkins amongst others are carrying on this great cause in bringing to attention the foul murderous genocidal slaughter of fellow human beings and abominable torturous acts on children and adults alike.
To apologise is nothing. To have their multi-billion pound assets confiscated and given as compensation to those they have murdered and abused and to imprison the criminals they hide under the veil of their religion would be a start of retribution.
