I started with a chase freedom unlimited card to get that 5x on travel and the many other shopping thru chase offers, as well as 1.5x on every other purchases then I just recently got the amex gold with a 90k signup bonus so I thought it was the perfect time for me to go with it, it also adds those 4x on dining and groceries so I think its perfect for me right now! any feedback about my decisions is greatly appreciated ❤

Hey John I know this is an old video but I am being offered a AMEX gold with SUB 100k points after spending 10k in 3 months with a 295 annual fee... I'm not really looking to spend 10k in the first three months but those points do sound pretty good what do you think I should do? I am looking for a travel card as well I have the Quicksilver right now which helps a bit but I am looking for more benefits .... I am also unemployed rn full time student.

You can't earn points paying people on venmo with these cards... right? With amex send its "No fees, no catch, no membership reward points."

Hello, I’m 20 and the only card I’ve had is the discover it, and I just applied to get the Amex gold. I think I would like to get the CSP as well. Should I wait to get it after I get the signup bonus on the Amex gold?

I'm so confused why nearly no one compares Amex Green to CSP. I think the Chase trifecta forces everyone to think of the 2nd most expensive card in the lineup as the 'mid tier' so they compare Gold vs CSP, when in reality the Green is much closer in terms of use cases and AF. If you are able to use CLEAR, the green more than pays for itself with that credit alone. The only real thing CSP has over Green is groceries, but that's where Green/Gold differ. Green is all travel while Gold is more everyday spending.

I’ve been pre approved for the chase preferred and reserve but I don’t think I need them as I don’t travel often. I’ll just stick with my little quicksilver card and my freedom flex. My credit age is only 10 months old.

Amex credits suck to use and their points suck to redeem for anything other than international business flights. Honestly, the CSP is the better card. Hot take, capital one savor one is more valuable than the Amex gold card.

I think the biggest problem for AMEX gold is a lot of place dont take that card including Costco.

AMEX Platinum beats both of them, I have sapphire preferred and planning on giving it up after a couple of years because their benefits are more or less covered by the other cards I have. Amex platinum though is much more value for money compared to gold, its 95$ annual fee with 84$ coming back from Disney plus by itself; also 6% cashback on grocery is fantastic; much better in my opinion

Mileage definitely varies as I would have to deviate from my normal spending habits to use any of the the credits on the Gold and therefore value them at $0.

John, thank you for this comparison. It is very clear and I found your video very educational.

Question though. Wouldn't you give the score to the sapphire card on the annual fee for the same reasons you gave it a score for the benefits? To redeem the benefits on the sapphire is easier than the gold. For the same reasons I would give the score to sapphire on the annual because I don't see myself once a month eating between Uber Eats, Cheesecake Factory or the others to maximize the credits every year. I would think it is easier to hold and pay $45 to take advantage of the sapphire benefits yearly than worry about hitting $240/year eating out. I am thinking meals can get very expensive and the $10/mo. credit may not be worth it.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

I have both! I got a 100k bonus points with Chase in 2021, and a 90k bonus with Gold in 2023…both cards are great. One thing I love about the sapphire are that the points are MORE for travel and for a few months out of the year for apple products. My 100k bonus turned out to be around $1,350 bonus for travel and apple products, which is phenomenal. Even if I only have like 2000 points, I can stretch my those to more for flights. Also, the Amex flight prices are more expensive than what I can find on google or skyscanner, while the sapphire search engine for flights have the exact same prices that I can find on google. Either way both cards rock

Can you combine points from Chase and Amex for purchasing Airfare? Assuming they share the same transfer partner, can you transfer X points from Amex and X points from Chase to that same partner and combine the points to cover the points needed for the ticket? Thank you

For the CSP, if the Uber Eats credit counts, the Dash Pass is worth the annual fee alone plus saving on fees (I've seen some save 1000s) may in effective annual fee.

I initially got the CSP with a 60K SUB (*cries in 80K SUB) in early January and hit the bonus in late February. I applied for the AMEX Gold in late March and get the increase SUB of 90K points plus $200 in statement credits. I couldn't resist, so I caved and hit the bonus in mid May. For the moment, I don't foresee myself downgrading either of these because they are so valuable. The increase travel protections with the CSP are second-to-none and plus the extra 25% points boost on the portal is awesome! For the Gold, I use the dining credits every month since i eat out regularly. The 4X points on groceries is awesome as well since I spend quite a bit on them monthly. If there is one caveat and a bit of a disappointment with the Gold card is that not all "Dining" places code as "Restaurants." Some places like breweries or taverns don't code correctly and you only get 1X back! If it was a small purchase I would have shrugged it off, but I used it at an out-of-town tavern and the bill was like $200 and I was robbed of the extra points! I learned my lesson and now if I am even questioning whether a "food" establishment will not code as a restaurant, I use the CSP. I noticed that bars and taverns, food merchants at malls, and even local food trucks code correctly with the CSP and you get 3X points for dining! However, now that I hit the bonus with both cards, I use the AMEX primarily for dining (80--85% of the time) and when I'm in doubt, I'll use the CSP to get the guaranteed 3X points. I went on a rant, but I love both cards! I plan on keeping them both for AT LEAST another year and maybe longer. Who knows? LOL

PS- Thanks for the info and for your great insights and comparisons as always!

I’d say the SUB category is a bit skewed, as Amex Gold (and all Amex cards) only allow 1 lifetime SUB on personal cards. Chase allows eligibility for a new SUB on Sapphire cards every 48 months.

Too many ads embedded in this. After a year I'm planning to ditch my Sapphire Preferred. It's not worth the annual fee. The benefits are surprisingly slim.

Great video! I am new to owning an AMEX Gold card and have one question on it. I am enrolled in the dining credit and just bought food through GrubHub. Will the $10 credit be automatically applied to my account? Or do I have to do something else to get the credit?

Of course both are great, but I’ve gotta get the reserve first cuz of Chase’s 5/24 rule. They really bone you with that one. Just got the flex so I’ll wait three months and the reserve will literally be my 5th card within a two year timeframe
