If he's a Sambo champ and a judo black belt, he is super obviously downplaying those aspects just to match you in pure BJJ. He did nothing and moved nothing like he would competing in those other martial arts, except for the slight escapes that are not familiar to the slow pace of BJJ practitioners.

When your opponent has his leg on the outside like that don’t try to get closer to him. Give him distance (he won’t be able to use his foot to block your hip) and grip under his calf. Be ready to drop your knee in case he dives through. Duck your head under his leg so that his leg is now to your inside. (watch some of Adam Satiev’s highlights).
