So, this video (watched 3x) is not helpful to build any wheel. It doesn't show the difference in front/rear wheel disc vs non disc patterns. It doesnt show 36 or 40 spoke wheels or how to determine weight vs spoke ratios. It doesn't say why/when a simple radial pattern fails. I'd like to see a complete class for any wheel that is required.

I had to take both of my wheels apart after finishing. Twice. Because I missed the first step of the second set of spokes where you select the proper hole in the flange. Everything bolts up, but every 4th spoke was way “too long” and the nipple was all the way outside the rim’s diameter.

I found the error tonight (3rd time’s the charm) and got everything assembled, tensioned, and trued. Thanks Park!

Great video, very easy to follow. Figured a 36 spoke must be the same, but with an extra spoke in each quarter, and it worked like a charm!
Thanks for the tutorial!

Jeez this page help you save lots of money i have an electric engine the wheel before was busted and i took the spokes of the wheel and the spokes from another wheel and i got confused when i had to put it back but if i look patiently at your video will be just great i will need a tool like that to measure tension and alignment but great video i will put myself to work tomorrow.

first time ever i finished lacing a wheel in less than the 20 minute video ( i watch it every time i lace a wheel lol yeah i have a bad memory but im slowly remembering)
complete contrast to the last wheel i built which was a completely nightmare, shimano metrea spokes which come with loctite on them and internal nipples. i twisted(bent) a few of them before realizing i need to grip them as far down as possible to prevent them spinning (bladed spokes). they're $5 CAD per spoke so i learned pretty quick but the loctite made them twist even before bottoming out so i had to clamp each spoke every turn even while just simply lacing. PITA

The only bad thing the video presentation is the rim size is not specificied. The presenter himself does not tell if the rim is a 24",26",27.5" or a 29.

How to make sure, that the axle of the hub is exactly in the middle of the rim. Will that constraint be given thru the length of the spokes?

Excellent video. Will try this week. One question you mentioned the same technic can be use for 28 hole (that I have)with small alterations. What exactly are those alterations ? I don’t want to screw it up.

I've enjoyed the video and have tried to follow it 6 times and get the same bad result each time, but I can not figure out what I am doing wrong! I am putting a wheel back together using the same hub and the same spokes but when I follow the instructions, the spokes are too long! This happens every time I try... What am I doing wrong? I've looked through all the comments and no one else has had this problem. Please help.

An undished wheel is easier to build, laterally stronger, and easier to keep round and true. Their spokes can be set to higher tensions. Some complain that high spoke tension makes a stiffer, more rigid wheel. But they say it like it was a bad thing. The higher tension makes the wheel a rigid unyielding disk, a perfectly reliable wheel. All the cushioning you want can be gained from the using lower pressure in the tires, and even more, by mounting the seat on a seat spring.

Tri-Flow works great 😊 to lube dry spoke ends, and nipples with. This greatly eases turning the spoke nipples, when truing, or building wheels 🛞, making wheel 🛞 truing and building easier. Your friend, Jeff.

I built a few wheels back in the 80's based on a book by Jobst Brandt called "The Bicycle Wheel" which was a great book but man I would have loved to see it in action like this. I find myself again needing to rebuild one after all these years and am thankful for your demonstration.

Note that on the non-drive side, the 4th set is oriented as the pulling spokes, to handle disc braking tension.
Should'nt the 3rd set be the pulling spokes on the drive side?, should'nt they be oriented the other way?

Just built two wheels using this tutorial! Still waiting on a bunch of other parts before I can actually test them though. I will say that I really had to pull on the hub to get the spokes in the rim to start threading the nipples on from the 3rd set on.

Doesn't lubricating the spokes threads make them loose up again quickly? Because I did that once for replacement spokes, and that was what happened. I thought about cleaning them again and then use lock tide instead.

Thank you for an interesting and informative video. On a cross-three pattern why go under the third spoke? This causes them to touch at that point. I have noticed that on every wheel that I rebuild there is always fretting at that point, and I've seen several spokes break there over the years although not a common occurrence. I don't do it any more. Additionally, I can now pluck the spokes to get an idea of their tension. Lastly, I now cross lace the rear drive side and radial spoke the left side. My non-disc brake fronts are all radially spoked.
