Rural electric coops were born in the New Deal era to electrify rural America, one of the crowning achievements of the 20th Century. But investments in rural America’s electric generation portfolio hasn’t kept pace and today these coops own some of the country’s dirtiest power plants.

The $10 billion in investments in coops made by the Inflation Reduction Act for everything from renewable energy installation to residential and commercial retrofits are a critical downpayment after years of neglect, but there is more work to be done. Thankfully, advocates around the country in some of America’s most marginalized communities are fighting for that cleaner, greener and less costly future.

Who knows, you might even be one of the 42 million Americans who belong to a rural electric coop!
