There are many absurdities in the paid repair method of established official service centers. They are adopting a method of replacing the entire motherboard, which only requires replacing a single $0.1 part. If they are making absurd profit margins, they will not even return the old motherboard to the customer after replacement.

Buy a laptop with a daughterboard. It has the power input on it, and costs around $10.

its a shame that manufactor dont have to list all parts they used. this lenovo design ist older than stoneage, most likely they use the same components since day one and reuse these from generation to generation. 2 cent part leads to "400 bucks" repair. or for an real expert an hour research and work. 80-100 bucks in germany for an normal work hour.

Lmao the laptop companies will never sell the the buttons sadly, why sell it for $.25 when the customer can buy a whole new laptop for $400 /s

Not to undermine your otherwise cool work but realistically people need to understand that amounts in the hundreds of bens for almost ANY repair is legit.
I don't know how it's running where you are but as a electronics repairsman our converted rates billed to the customer are around 70$ the hour and while we're not the kind to also bill any light consumables this doesn't yet include any components we'd need to replace. But said hourly amounts will apply to disassembly/reassembly of the device (which is more often than not a pain with laptops), diagnosis, the actual repair which might lead to further diagnosis and repairs, they'll include actual work hours my boss pays me, shop expenses, equipment used, an insurance and legal taxes...
We personally only charge for the actual time we've worked (to the quarter), but we give prior approximations and I know in some countries giving a precise amount upfront is mandatory and if I had to I would certainly never ask any less than 400$ for ANY repair concerning a laptop if I want to keep any chances to live up to our warranty on the long run...
People underestimate how truly time consuming it is, even finding and sourcing parts can take ages, which is still something a qualified worker must do, because you fail to mention how much time it really takes for you to fix it all steps considered and how much that amount of qualified work truly weighs on the work market (A LOT) before you let people jump to any conclusions concerning value...

Anybody have any idea why a Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 3 Chromebook would suddenly have a dead left arrow key? Rebooting and "power washing" (factory reset) did nothing. I only tried the factory reset when asked to try it by Lenovo support.

I recently was in the market for a new laptop and really liked the Lenovo Yoga 7i with the i7 and rtx 3050 6gb and the 2.5k 90hz IPS touch screen. BUT I did not like the power button being on the side like that. It just seemed like it would be a weak point. It looks like I might have been right. What I was worried that it could be damaged carrying it around in my backpack. Im really careful with my stuff but that just seems like a bad idea having it exposed at all times.

The additional pad at the back might be to brace the button against the external force that could rip it off.

I mean the cost to the shop to diagnose was probably 100 dollars, add to that labor and searching for and ordering the correct part, not just trying something found on an old junk board. With a parts mark up. That was probably a fair enough price for the repair. They have to guarantee the work and when it fails next month....

Repaie shops are not always right,i once went and wanted to see if i could fix my old laptop because when i turned on it wouldnt show all the blue lughts only 1 instead of 3 and they said its because of the screen, i disconnected the screen and still what will that prove by changing to a new screen? Just tryna get money out of you

To be fair to this ‘repair shop’ the only reason you were able to do the repair was because you happened to have a donor board with an exact/similar switch. If that were not the case you would have looked to buy a replacement switch, found you couldn’t and having to conclude that it could not be repaired or that you would have to buy a complete replacement board.

I won’t left them off the hook completely though because they did not replace all the screws which is lazy and negligent.

Since rise of Aliexpress repair shop or repairman can purchase a box of random micro push buttons for peanuts. $400 for power button replacing? Well, if someone is ready to pay such amount to me, I can replace the button for him :)
By the way state of button he replaced indicate that one who meddled witth a button before, hadn't proper tools for microsoldering. Flux choice matters too.
