3.5 lbs is a huge amount of weight...most backpackers today carry 10 lbs or less of gear...

Get a gun. What if the bear attacks when you are on the move not sleeping in the tent?

Environmental reasons is an ignorant argument for not moving detritus in the woods.

this video is a bit misleading and inaccurate. Yes, bear fences will keep SOME bears away. But bears that have already experienced getting shocked by a bear fence have and will dug underneath the fence in a few minutes. The bear learns the fence is nothing more than a shock, especially bears that are used to being around campers (for example, near or in campgrounds). The bear will dig underneath the fence like a dog and slither under it. No problems and in just a few minutes....Not sure how this test by the researchers did not see that happen. Possibly because this was done on bears in captivity which are not starving or very hungry bears. In a campground or the wild, a bear is not fed 3x per day like in captivity, and tey will gladly take a little shock to its back while it slithers underneath the fence for a tasty marshmellow or two.

I have woken up in the middle of the night to a bear checking out my tent. It was a black bear. I was able to scare it off. Didn't sleep after that

if you camp with a group, bears will never come to your camp. Most of those attacks happened to solo hikers. Also, if bear attacks your tent, your friends can save you by deploying bear mace.

His FIRST sentence. 'Most of us would never think of a bear attacking us in our sleep'. Ermm. It's the first thing I thought about when considering a hiking trip in the USA, that's why I'm here. 😅😂

Stop with the misleading info. Black bear attacks are NOT common. I'm more likely to get killed in a car accident on my way home from work than get attacked by a bear while camping.

I took one to Alaska for a 90 mile raft trip. I found I couldn't use it because of all the rocky ground wouldn't allow placement of the poles

I live up in northern Canada and my solution is a marlin 45-70 with a 400 grain bullet that costs me about 2$ per bullet..and my dog is also crazy and chases bears off regularly

Best money I ever spent for backcountry hunts. Paid for itself two hours into the first night. Woke up to a grizzly snorting at my fence!!! Damn thing paced below my fence two nights in a row. All food was 400yds away, up a tree. I decided to get the hell out of there, after walking straight up behind him in the morning. (Pro tip: apparently screaming and throwing walking sticks 10ft in the air, also scares the hell out of the bear!). I'll gladly pack those 3.5 extra pounds!

That's what I use when camping. Not just for bears, but keeping any critter out.

If set up right they're a great deterrent. Now if I could just find something similar to keep out the ticks, scorpions, snakes, spiders, mosquitos and everything else that wants to eat a part of you that'd be great.

Interesting, but it reminds me of the SCUBA diver electro fin thing that companies tried selling to divers to save them from nasty sharks.. Completely funny (at least in SCUBA) as divers WISH they got to see sharks (not fed to bring them in - dangerous!) but almost never do, except nurse's. Curious though.. I'm not paranoid, but interesting topic..

Those fences work okay but not great.
If it's plugged in and the bear senses the electricity ... or feels electricity ... it might slow a hungry Bear down. But won't stop a hungry Bear from eventually coming through the fence.

On the other hand... It does give someone time to wake up and realize there is a hungry bear coming into your camp and headed towards your tent. Probably giving most people enough time to arm themselves with bear spray or a firearm.

Using this fence in conjunction with small window alarms with a magnetic trigger (Bell & Howell makes some) attached to braided fishing line and strung around the outer perimeter of the fence .... Those will send an audible signal as the bear approaches the fence and some of them are quite loud... Loud enough to scare a bear away if he's not too aggressive.
