susan howatch is amazing. i've read her starbridge series over the last twenty years, just finished 'absolute truths' & now I'm reading her earlier works which are more gothic, penmarric & cashelmara. they don't have the constant brilliant humor of starbridge, though.

I miss Dorothy Daniels novels.
