On the european vintage market: Tandberg 2080, Telefunken 7050, Sonab R4000, Luxman 1500; all of these would beat most of the receivers on display here. (Some are totally unknown to me, like "Realistic". Don´t think it ever was sold in Europe).

Well I had a few of those and 2 quads not listed. pioneer Sx-1250 9 (could NOT afford the high end model at the time) was my favorite after I had a gold marantz stolen from a house break in.

Question: I'm just getting my feet wet in collecting Vintage 70's audio gear. I have (2) Amplifier's/tuner pairs & (2) Receivers. I'm using (1) pair of New Klipsch 600M II. I would like to switch between the (4) sources. I purchased Douk power meter/AB switcher and it works fine but it's only for (2) power sources. I see that you built that equipment switch selector, very cool. Do you know of any manufactured switches? I'm not that handy with creating my own switcher. thanks

Sound quality wise (not looks criteria) the two I found particualy amazing are: Luxman R-1120/A and the Kenwood KR-9600. The winner of the two being the Luxman. However, the Luxman has a cheap exterior build quality - very Plasticy. But the sound this reciver produces is just phenomial. 9600 more powerful and better exterior build - a close second.

Most of them are really very beautiful receivers. The question is if they are still u,seful because of the digital era.

This is a really hard test to DO IT RIGHT. At a bare minimum, you should do a level measurement at 1 Khz and 5 Khz and 10 Khz and 15 Khz and then equalize the tone controls to get all of the receivers FLAT. Then you should DO ANOTHER TEST to equalize the volume at these 4 levels and get them all EQUAL. Then you should probably do pairwise comparisons flipping back and forth (i know i know 16 choose two is 120 different pairs) but then we could listen to them and pick our favorite of each pair and like a chess tournament, find the best. A selector switch is not good for this you really need a piano / cassette-style pushbutton console (only 1 button down at a time). Also, no speakers please. Digitize straight out of the receiver outputs. Probably too difficult to do it RIGHT in a reasonable amount of time ..

Sansui 9090 for me. It would have been easier with vocals.

My top vintage receiver, which I purchased new in 1981 and still have today, is the Kenwood 9G. It's massive size, yet elegant design, with stainless brushed faceplate and large glass tuning window, combined with knobs and switches that have just the right 'feel' to them when used, plus the walnut veneer cabinetry all combine to make a great looking centerpiece to my stereo tower. It has a preamplifier section that can handle 3 sets of speakers, two headphone outs, has inputs for two turntables, two tape decks, aux (CD), microphone input with audio mixing capabilities, AM/FM, with FM Dolby, triple tone control which can be by-passed, and a timer which can turn off the unit and other audio components which are plugged into it. It was conservatively rated at 80 watts continuous per channel into 8 ohms, but its dynamic range and peak power output can easily handle up to 300 watts. What really makes it my top pick however is that even though I've owned it now for over 40 years, and it has delivered perfect musical performance while playing anything and everything, aside from some occasional cleaning of the knobs and switches, the 9G has required ZERO repairs, not even needing a light bulb, in all the many years I've owned it! That makes it an incredible value for the money I spent to purchase it way back then. In fact, I liked this reciever so much, that I bought a second one, a few years later when I found it availalble at a local pawn shop off base. I still have them both, and they still sound perfect. PJM

I usually had separates. The only receiver I ever owned was the Kenwood KR-9600. I went to a Pacific Stereo "sale" around 1978. I fell in love with the pretty lights. I owned 4 ohm speakers (Allison Three), and Kenwood was one of the few receiver manufacturers to publish a 4 ohm power rating, and to have 4 ohm power that significantly exceeded the 8 ohm power.

I had a sony STR 5800 tank, I've loved it's design far more modern, pure than the American car look of competition. I switched to Rotel and a tuner but frankly the STR was very good, I could certainly enjoy it today.

Recapped with Würth capacitors from Germany and 2 big Vishays from USA. It sounds massive powerfull, spacious, warm, detailed and very dynamic.

You already hit on it....start ups are restricted with funding, tools, direction and opportunities. So they can be risky. Look and invest in companies that provide benefits, like 401k, pension, medical, profit sharing or stock option purchase plans and vacation. Which is more stressful? Working the job at a start up or one that's been around for a while?

Thank you for the video. I enjoyed it.  I have a suggestion if you really want to know which sound viewers like most.  You might want to make another video that viewers can do blind tests of those receivers and have them vote for the best sound to them since "good sound" is subjective. Unless the whole idea of this comparison is about how those receiver look.

The one guy needs to get his ears checked or cut back on the hyperbole, as the HPM-100 is probably one of the most underwhelming speakers of all time I have ever heard. Bought a pair because they were inexpensive in an estate sale but they were very unimpressive. It's too bad, they are solidly built they just sound mediocre as hell. I had some Infinity Interlude speakers at the time that I put them against just for the fun of it, and there was no contest the Interludes sounded better in every aspect. The poor bass reproduction was the biggest one that got me, a smaller driver speaker easily outdid it on bass.

beautiful old gear but those HPM series, especially the 100 and 150 you can't even HEAR the super tweeter unless you're a bat, great looking though but terrible sound. Boomy and NO sound stage, they're great for a garage or a block party though.

Fisher RS 1080 , 65 pounds , no contest against Rs 215 , 45 pound , owned both and many others , stolen from my home in 2010 😅😅 its difficult to say whos was best at this point every capacitor is gone , rebuilding mostly everything inside no easy task lol , the 1060 had everything the same even the 30 pound power coil , only the main two filter caps were smaller , 😮 equal to the rs215 or so
