That's the same joke I made when I first learnt the phrase AA制: what does Alcoholics Anonymous have to do with the act of splitting the bill? To this day I haven't looked for an explanation why AA has come to mean to split the bill in Chinese

I think this is true as i have working partners living in shantou , 3-4 times visit there and turns out , only few kinds of food i can really eat ,they eat everything lol. Anyway i really like the way you tell the story and i listen it everyday 🎉. Thank you

My husband is from Shanghai. When we were engaged, Chinese people would tell me: "You're so lucky! Shanghainese men are very cosomopolitan, gentlemenly, and they are excellent cooks!" These stereotypes all turned out to be true. 🥰

i'm not sure about cat, but dog is eaten in many places in china, not just guangdong, but also guangxi, fujian and many other places north and south, both in cities and the countryside. i've had it several times and enjoyed it. rat is also popular in the far south of china (and much more so in thailand), and there are many other foods most westerners would find objectionable all over east asia, but especially in south china and SE asia. as far as eating placenta, that does occur in china but is something western people also do, as both east and west there are believed therapeutic benefits therein. if i had to 'codify' the chinese way of selecting food from the animal kingdom, it would be that except for rejecting cannibalism, you dont turn your nose up at anything nutritious. it is a simple and sensible attitude toward food, much better than the western attitude that begins with certain loosely observed and apparently arbitrary biblical prohibitions, and goes on to projecting your anxieties onto others by believing you know what they should and shouldn't eat. to justify it you make up reasons like global warming or concern about the suffering of non-humans, or the worst sentiment of the anti-human crazies, outrage at the supposed injustice humans perpetrate on other animals. of course there are buddhists who eschew killing, but for buddhists that is a personal decision and not something you judge others about. you wont find buddhists among those organizing encampment at a dog meat festival for the purpose of harassing and putting down those who eat dog, but you'll find plenty of people sympathizing with dogs who believe the aborting of human babies is just fine if it makes someone feel better or maybe if it helps the climate

I once walked past a cat restaurant outside Guangzhou. The cats were in cages. It was a long time ago. And I won't describe the market I saw in Guangzhou in case some of you are eating.

My only wish Chinese people respect women off all age in marriage and don't name women left over women.

I honestly think the Sichuan stereotypes arent so far from the truth. All the chinese people I became friends with are exactly like the first 2 stereotypes and its the reason we get along so well. They must be odd in some things though. They listen to chinese trap/rap/hip hop (although its my favorite type of chinese music too) so it sort of feels like theyre more "street" than your average chinese lol
