What the controller could have said is, runway change due to X circumstances, expect 28 right, hold short runway 28 right, advise when ready 🤷‍♂️

Pilot should have stopped short of 28R so that other planes could land and he could take his time getting his numbers in.

The pilot started the disagreement with ATC and was being a total SEXIST DH. ATC asked the pilot how much time he needed to prep for takeoff from 28R and he said "2 minutes" which she said would work as a incoming at his rear was 5 minutes out. When it took longer for him to prep, it became untenable due to the incoming jet arriving at his rear. He then proceeded to blame the Woman ATC for his screw up by back-tracking to "next time give me more than 30 seconds" on the change from 28L to 28R. Typical sexist male behavior. Bet he wouldn't mouth off like that to a male ATC. ATC's number one job is to keep incoming and outgoing flights SAFE and take-offs and landings as timely as possible. The pilot taking longer than "2 minutes" to prep for takeoff from 28R which necessitated him having to move his plane from the take off location was his fault. Instead of being professional about moving his plane out of the way, he decided to start a verbal altercation with the woman ATC by making passive-aggressive, snarky, sexist comments. What a sniveling whiny little crybaby he is. The ATC woman has been around the block and shut his sexist mouth up. Good job Sister!

Many years ago I was a police dispatcher in a medium size town. I would often ride with the officers when I was off duty, I can tell you that it really helped me have a perspective of what the officers were doing in the field.

What appalling atc! "Any luck on the numbers" is no way a recognised query. Well done the pilots; shame atc are not pilots, as if so there would be fewer of these arguments.

As a controller in training, i feel she made it rude to the pilot… factual speaking she is right with the 2 min but if it doesn’t work out just adapt the plan without being passive agressive… i totally understand the pilot.

kelsey serious question: the ATC's rather predictable (and if i may... almost smug(nobody questions her last second changes, its in the book)) OOOHHhhhHHH reaction to "attitude" might sound debatable to a non aviation person - but surely the pilots (despite their understandable frustration) knew that was the likely reaction they'd get (and one which the FAA wouldnt think twice about supporting) ... so why do it? why get on the radio and basically say "listen b*****! we did our job properly at the gate cant you do yours instead of sending us last minute christmas shopping with your mum?"

i have retaliatory insuburdinate attacks of that sort all the time, i dont have a wide body ATPL to defend though. so why do it?

thanks man! love your work.

Never let a controller into your cockpit (metaphorically - when they are controlling. It's fine to have them actually there as a passenger or observer). In this case, the controller gave the pilot the option to line up or to hold short. The decision should have been to hold. Period. If the option was not given to hold short, the pilot should have refused the line-up and held anyway. Rwy changes, new ATIC after pushback, new departures, engine out procedures, performance numbers and all the corresponding briefings take way too long. (and apparently the time associated with the 10 miles out advisory of the other a/c did not consider the IFR separation and wake turbulence separation requirements, which further reduces the 5 minutes. ALL in all, last minute runway changes are extremely rare. Don't rush it.

I like your videos but you keep repeating the same basic things about flying planes. You act like you are talking to someone who knows nothing about airplanes every time. Some of have learned from your channel and others and we don't need to you keep repeating the same basic things every time. It feels condescending. We get it. .

They are both in the wrong. The controller should have never giving them the option to line up and wait, instead she should have only told them to hold short of 28R and advise when ready (like she did the first time before the runway change). The pilots should have not been in such a rush and asked if they could just hold short instead of lining up to wait. Both were very unprofessional after the very minor incident occurred.

I think the pilots should have held short of the runway to make sure everything was ok and NOT proceeded onto the runway, however, I think she should find a new career, perhaps at McDonalds.

Let’s have a big ole BBQ sand fish fry at the air field. Pilots and ATC. Make a little boxing ring and get some of those goofy oversized boxing gloves. Have some good food and air out our differences / take out a little frustration.

Not an aviator but having watched some of your videos isn’t it the case that once cleared to line up and wait that runway belongs to them as long as they need it to take off? (Fedex heavy vs. southwest) Seems like ATC didn’t have the right to rush them off maybe?

I know they would have gotten written up for this but I wish the pilot had said to ATC: "The next time you fly consider if you want your pilot to take off unprepared because ATC changed a runway in a hurry and now the pilot must choose between making sure his plane and crew are ready or following the directions of a snarky ATC?

All the pilot had to do was say he’s holding short and will need 4-5 minutes. Pilots shouldn’t rush. I don’t, I just tell ATC “no, I need longer time, I’ll call you when I’m ready.” Works for me.

Why do these numbers have to be punched in?? They should be already in the computer. The only thing you should do is tell the computer which sets of numbers to use.

Ok lets be fair. The moment theyre ready (pilots) and theres traffic on a busy airport, they looove asking for sequence and estimate distracting the atco, blocking the frequency and not helping at all. Like if the atco had nothing more to do. Their job at the tower is far more critical and on the edge than just input some info on the plane computer (which is actually the one doing most of the job) like a videogame.

Now, this specific time she offer them the longest runway, so their numbers for 28L were absolutely valid for 28R. Is not the other way around where they give you a shortest rwy and then obviously you need to recalculate.

Now, her only mistake was lining up the DAL. Probably she couldve kept them off the rwy until they were ready, smtg that can actually take several minutes. As an atco, you can never trust entirely on them pilots. Cuz the moment you start doing that, you're playing with fire... sorry but thats the truth.

I mean, if the pilots had just been honest and said it would taken them 4min+ to change, she would have held them and let the other plane land first. It's the pilots job to provide good feedback to ATC, its not ATC job to know that 2min actually means 5min...

Excellent point of view :-) I would also propose that pilots should also have an opportunity available to them; to experience the tower environment in a ' live' situation (periodically) too

I see a lot of people blaming the ATC behavior and instructions here, but as everyone knows, pilots have the final decision, they could have been more cautious and stay off the runway if they didn't have the numbers ready for that announced possible last-minute runway change.

The whole bottom line to this is simply the fact that 1) A/C lied to ATC in an effort to not lose time/place in take off position 2) Ego's and attitudes have no place where others lives are at stake.
IF the pilot had simply said "It's going to take us 3-5 minutes to reset our systems from our planned departure point" then this would have been a non-issue. But the A/C wanted to stay in line and get off the ground without delay....
Delta just needs to stop lying how long it's going to take and carry on and leave their ego back at the gate. NO sympathy for Delta at all in this case

My answer to her statement on pre-brief would have been "Yes, we did pre-brief, and that pre-brief was ''If ATC decides to switch runways less than 5 minutes from roll-out, we will hold short and do a methodical re-entry & check. And that is what we are going to do. Standby''
I'm not a pilot, but as an engineer and ex-combat infantry I could list about a 1,000 scenarios that would wind up that way. In fact, that kind of procedural + on-the-ground failure is what caused that University in Florida's bridge to collapse on a road that shouldn't have been occupied in the first place and kill people. The ''ATC'' folks said, "Go ahead and run traffic through the construction zone" while the ''pilots'' on the ground said ''We don't need any extra safety check procedures, because we are pre-tensioning, just like the other times''. And someone made a mistake (that should have been clearly noticeable) and people that should not have been there anyway died.
