What about the Martial Arts, within the Roman Empire, led by glittering Constantinople, the longest running empire in world history? Why is this history so silent?

HEMA i think is the components of diffrrent styles during the medieval era but not the ancient (bronze era) style. Ancient is the best in close combat medieval era is the best in distance fighting(second to gun fighting). Bronze era swordsman were so good that they are believe to be god status being.

There should be movies about Historical European martial arts, no 18th century fencing, cliches.

I personally have practised wrestling and now I do boxing but I didn't know there was such a thing. I always liked that type of combat, especially spears.

The Hema Alliance isn't all that hot. There are other large Hema groups which are as good and better. Marsden's Hema alliance tightly and aggressively controls and punishes free speech within its ranks, while aggressively pushing a revisionist history of Europe that suits wishful thinking on their part. For example, I received severe trouble from them for merely mentioning the Crusades. In my opinion, HEMA is great but that alliance does not represent it well!

Join ARMA or some other group aside from HemaA.

This is a great way to study martial arts in general. Why the hell do all other martial art schools (mainly USA here) not follow something like this, especially for something like mma (would be a great goal wouldn’t it)? I mean the concepts of studying the styles and techniques not using the weapons.

For those saying eastern martial arts cant be used in ufc. Remember, almost all mma/ufc fighters have trained in the eastern martial arts (fedor, silva, gsp, mcgreggor, machida, and many others.) Bjj came from judo which is eastern, kickboxing came from muay thai which is eastern, according to historians the mongolians (east) were the first who founded complex wrestling arts, not the greeks (west). And theres mma competitions in the east as well, the martial arts world does not revolve around ufc, the asians fighters they invite to ufc mostly has to fight someone younger than him which is not fair. If u say asian cant fight westerner i have two words for u, MANNY PACQUIAO

I'm so pleased one of the students said there are similarities.

its so obvious that there are similarities because people are the same basic structure and there are only so many ways to move.

a sword is a sword and a straight, double edged sword of 3 1/2 ' long is gonna be used the same way no matter the culture it came from

Come for the cheesy growling bear animation … stay for the self-important narrator; surprised I made it all the way through actually - I guess, despite some pretty bad production choices, the topic is interesting enough, that the less than stellar vid isn't enough to wreck it, but boy, it's trying.

I'm an eastern martial arts learner and there are a lot of similarities between the karate and aikido that I know, but I am also planning on learning some HEMA because it's interesting to learn my own countries past and it looks effective, a lot of Asian martial arts are slow progression and not fully about fighting, but more discipline and self respect, this looks in some ways more effective.

Very nice introduction to Western martial arts. It's a myth that Europe did not have sophisticated martial arts but w/ the advent of guns, many traditional fencing or martial art schools died out in Europe. We still have boxing, wrestling & fencing in the West but they are taught as sports rather than combat. Many of the techniquest demonstrated in this short video remind me of Filipino martial arts (FMA), especially the disarms. I am studying FMA now & one difference I notice between FMA & other popular martial arts (taekwondo, karate, kung fu) is that FMA places more emphasis on strikes to the limbs rather than traditional blocks or parries. This is known as "defanging the snake" or destructions in FMA.

In my opinion people should drop their advance weapon (guns, nuke, bomb, etc) and use the sword again. Why? welp you dont have 100% control when you are using a gun, nuke, bomb, etc even if you are an expert. With a sword you can with lots of training. This way we wouldn't "accidently" get civilian casualties as much and others stuft.
