It happen to me with an iPod touch 2nd generation and after 6 years of using it it exploded. One night I was just FaceTiming my cousin and charging it when the call suddenly ended ( luckily I had put it in front of me a min before it happen to look at something ) and then the phone started making boiling sounds and making white clouds of smoke in my room. ( there was just like a huge cloud of smoke but no fire ) Luckily it was charging so I grab it from the charger and run in the corridor. It stopped after a while. ( had to go turn off the smoke machine of the place I was living ) and then I had a neighbor borrow his camera to take pictures of the exploded phone and sent it to apple. Apple contacted me in email and even let me choose the color ( chose red version ) and Couple of days later apple sent me a brand new iPod touch of the latest gen of that time. ^^
Sadly it wasn’t the same storage as the one that had exploded. But hey new iPod ^^

Not gonna lie after show my mom this, my mom literally buy a new iPhone, and throw out Her iPhone 4 as well.

The problem with Li-ion batteries is that it expands after a few years and then explodes. Manufacturers must make batteries easily replaceable so that it can be inspected for signs of degradation and can be replaced easily.
