Retro Handheld Buying Guide - RG35XX Plus / R36S / Miyoo Mini Plus / RG35XX

I have a Miyoo Mini+ and a OLED Steam Deck. Perfect combo.

Bought R36s as first retro handheld, having fun with that now. We need more devices like that.

It really sucks this comparisons lacks "original" Miyoo Mini (v4 is the only available now for purchase, so it would make more sense. Especially many said it has better than MM+ screen).

GKD Pixel is the new cool kid in block. I really like and bring it everywhere with me (so small, that even with shell there's enough space in pockets for keys and other stuff). Unfortunately 320x240 and lacks bluetooth), but for Montocross Maniacs/Tetris/Alleway and other quicks sessions it's awesome. For TV(NES/SNES), Arcades/MAME and Atari Lynx we got full screen integer scaling.

I'm generally disappointed with the selection of handhelds. People are hyped over Miyoo Mini (plus and standard), while it has deprecated hardware, RTC is not connected properly(it's supported by both MM and MM+ SoCs), lack video output and bluetooth.
While WiFi is cool, it's power hungry. With Bluetooth you can connect headphones, controllers, keyboards and handhelds together for NetPlay (Bluetooth supports identical networking like WiFi. Way less range and speed, but for local GameBoy Link like experience it would be awesome)

I really like horizontal handhelds(kids also prefers it too and refuse to carry SteamDecks, except the car), but daughter would like to have Stardew Valley on this small device.

What if i defintely want analog sticks but i want the power of the rg35xx plus as well?

i´m from Italy ... are some of these only avialable in the US ?

How to save a game with the R36S please ? (mine keep on "save statut 0%" ...).

Tell me please what is the better R36 s or Anbernik plus?

Miyoo must be more competitive in other markets, here in Canada the Ambernics are widely available and relatively affordable.
Didn't realize it was also so weak.

Great comparison, it was really helpful to see them all together! One editing note that would help us viewers out would be to place the name of the device you were zooming in on (like for the display or sound comparison) so that we can know which is which! Other than that, awesome stuff!

During editting the editor used some sound filter to elilminate noise. So when you test consoles noises we can't hear anything.

What did you mean by more power? In the end of the video? I was thinking about buying the R 36S because of the analog sticks they ignore the part I mentioned about the analogues, but my question is what did you mean by power?

R36S is now 55€ ... RG35XX Pus with analog like the R36S would be perfect 👌

hi taki, i am new to handhelds so I am coming from a newbie perspective. I really must suggest thinking of some way for new viewers to keep track of "which" handheld is which. Either always keep them in the same order or label them on screen, or refer to them constantly by name instead of "this one".

I have an OG Miyoo Mini and just grabbed a r36s. Tried uOS on r36s, it's a nicer OS but, DreamCast and Saturn support is meh with it, lack of cores. The Ark runs them fine. It's got a bigger screen than the mini and is more powerfull. I got my r36s for like $32 with coupons.

Truth be told, I think the r36s is the best bang for the buck...

Is there something similar to this that actually reads nintendo cartridges?

i have the RG35XX+ and the Shoulder button rattling drove me crazy. I opened it up and fixed it by putting electric tape on the back of the buttons

What if I want 2, what would be the best combination with the RG35XX+? I’m leaning towards R36S but I like the Miyoo aswell

The rg35xx has 5000 games and the miyoo mini plus can have 5000 32gb 6000 64gb 11000 128 gb

just got R36S and I totally love it, just few cons:
- Led Light is too bright to play at night => we can fix by overlay it by a ducktape.
- Button is not quite great but still playable
- Joystick is not quite great for fighting/fast pacing game like as KOF, SS

Hi. Im planning to play PokeMMO on portable handheld. Which one would you recommend? I'm thinking about getting R353V cause it got touchscreen,wifi and it runs on android

Can you help me make my decision haha im stuck thinking of getting either mini plus or rg35xx + just to play pokemon games which one should i get?

I'm just waiting for the next actual premium handled in the form factor is the 353v/r36. With something like the hall sticks and chipset of the 405m, maybe even its screen (but not the big chungus form factor of the 405v) or even the beefier chipset from the rp4 pro. I like the small, one hand-able form factor of the 35xx. I want one that's just a bit more powerful but can do the full n64 and dreamcast library at least, but enough power to handle the ps2 rpg's would be awesome too (the rp4 pro is the only one that can handle wild arms 3) and I like the small form factor that can fit in my uniform pants pocket while I wait for a bed at the hospital with a stable patient.

The 35xx plus is tempting, I would like it's ability to upscale some ps1 games like chrono cross (the 35xx can't) but the stock OS just... looks kinda bad.

I don't even really care about price. I want the form factor and am willing to shell out for performance. 353v, better build quality, more horsepower. Gimme that.

Thanks for the review, I just got my RG35xx plus, and it's amazing! Though it's my first handheld emulator, so there's no comparison on hand. But I think the Miyoo Mini + would be too small for me. Based on the performance test you show I think the RG35XX plus is perfect!

So what I got out of this review is all of them are garbage and don’t get any yet. Not sure why they can’t make them twice the price and have a bit of quality. My favourite is that first one how you said the menu button doesn’t even do anything. Like why even add it? That’s soooo weird.

i like the bighger one more as i have huge claws but i find the stick layout utterly retadrded. why would they put the dpad / ABXY above the thumb sticks... that is unacceptable.

I love how reviewers act like ram is irrelevant. When that couldn't be further from the truth... How can you guys not understand how computers work? I also find the rattle test stupid. I literally never shake my handhelds like a maraca...
