This video started out as a "short" but while making it, I realized that one minute would not be enough to explain everything, thus here we are.
Let me know your thoughts on Lelouch's fate at the end of Code Geass.

Personally, I am VERY happy that we get to see Lelouch alive in Code Geass Lelouch of the Resurrection.

Why, you ask? Because the way I see it, instead of contradicting what Lelouch stood for in the original ending, I see it as a REWARD for Lelouch's sacrifice.

Like, he saved the entire world from the tyranny of the old Britannia Empire, even giving the chance to Britannians to start anew towards a better future with everyone. So if Lelouch SAVED the world, then who's gonna SAVE HIM if it's not his family and friends?

The fact that Lelouch gained a Code as his 'SAVING THROW' and retained his Geass means that he has a second chance, an opportunity to see the world that he had saved with his very own two eyes, as well as a new purpose for he is now an immortal.

But this time, he can also accompany CC so that they could live their lives together, even if it means outliving their friends.

Then again, Lelouch is still 'LEGALLY' dead, so the consequences of his actions still remains as the 'evil emperor of Britannia' and everyone in the world pretty much don't know if he's even alive, save for a few.

That's why I'd LOVE to see Lelouch, now LL, and CC hunt for the Geass fragments as well as work from behind the scenes on future Code Geass installments, especially in the upcoming Roze of the Recapture.

That being said, if both of them were to outlive their comrades, then they might as well gain more new ones to aid them in their journey and in turn, help their friends, both old and new, solve their many issues.

Plus, it'd be cool to see LL and CC oversee the new generations, as well.

I think lelouch actually died
I would love him to survive but no
In anime it is shown time and time
Lelouch isnt a god or special
He is just gifted bit more than other

He loses in battle of strength everyrime witheveryone
In battle of minds he was struggling with cornelia and schneizel many times getting out alive by a hair spec
His power code geass wasnt only one or perfect
He was again and again beaten by other geass users like
Mao charles or even shamma

He won by combination of his powers
Yeah he was better
But not special it was just combination of his powers planning etc

It aleays bring it up no matter the mask lelouch was wearing

He always was just a human

Only at the end as he accepted his life as a sacrifice he went full geass intelligence combo and got a sayian boost

Geassed up a god planet
Out smarted and run laps around schneizel actively arguing with him
ON A FUCKING PRERECORDED VIDEO

Foresaw kururugis moment to die

But still was a human if not for suzuku he would win as an emperor

(Btw if not for suzuku he would win as a zero already bakc in s1)

Personally, i would say he survived, just because any movie after his death would be pointless if he wasnt there. Plus, it feels better for me. I also believe that the way Lelouch got killed and then "resurrected" is a good way to reintroduce him, and maybe he could have a curse on himself for coming back to life. Like the fact that he lost his mind, that was a good beginning move. And the ending of the movie was good imo as well, the fact that he is wandering around the world with CC, not settling down anywhere for too long, as if they were refugees.

It's been a hot minute since I watched the series but I remember thinking back then that Lelouch was alive with c.c. because I thought it would be very unlike Lelouch to up and leave her behind, I also seem to recall a line in the anime that states death would be nice because you can then be with everyone who died, so I always thought Lelouch would chose not to go be with them since he wouldn't deserve such a happy ending with them. Mostly though it's just up and leaving c.c. alive and alone seemed odd to me.

Honestly, it seemed like he had survived by using the code. (Or was seemed to be similar to a code, or a mutated code that he obtained when he banished his parents.) It made for the whole series to take a bright turn because his whole goal was to make a world where his sister needn't worry. And Lelouch having fulfilled his goal getting the chance to find his own happiness was a much needed end for him.

Lulouch has to have survived at the end for the shows Name to make Sense, CodeGeass normally you can not have both yes, because Code bearers are rare you would likely never meet two, one to give you the geass and another to take their code. taking the code from the one who granted you the geass removes your geass as the code bearer that granted that power is now dead thus nullifying the contract. but if you get a code from another bearer than you could in theory become immortal while having your geass powers in tact.

This situation would make it so C.C would never be alone and she would always be there for Lulu as well as an anchor. having suzaku around as well as the one who acts in the light while Lulu and C.C act in the shadows to always keep the peace. between the three of them no one can really stop them since Suzaku is effectively immortal and invulnerable as he was commanded to live so unless Lulu dies Suzaku will be the protector of earth forever even if he wishes for death as the only way to die would to get lulu killed but he couldnt do that as that would act against the command.

in typical Lulouch fashion he created an overly complex web of crap that catches basically all loopholes.

My headcannon was always that Lelouch inherited C.C.'s code and made her mortal, becoming immortal himself. It would've made so much sense, that C.C. could have real and normal life, potentially growing old, with thrills and emotions of treasuring the only life she has. And Lelouch would pay for his sins by watching all his loved ones die eventually, without being able to ever visit them again, and one day crave death himself.

In my opinion he did not die in the original anime series for 2 reasons.
1. We see him change as a person throughout the series especially cause of CC, so who's to say he won't change his older beliefs to fit the new reality and to just keep living with CC, after all, they both evolved together so why not keep doing it?
2. As we know he has fooled the public in the anime series a lot, so why not fool the viewers too? It's on brand for him to do and it'd be yet another cool thing to add to his resume.

I'm in the idea that Lelouch is still alive

1 because I want to believe that he is still alive

2 because I think that the authors had made the final vague. In fact, there are some elements that bring us to choose what we prefer.
I believe in this because Charles takes by the neck lelouch with the hand of the code, and you really think that the authors hadn't done this without a goal? And then when Lelouch is dying and his sister touchs him, she sees his memories and this is a power of code, not geass (I think that this is a overwhelming proof, but maybe I had misunderstood). There is also CC that is talking with someone in the end (for sure not with a ghost, and I don't care about what the DvDs said, becuase they go to bring changes to the original story).
About the fact that when someone obtains code, he lost geass, I have to say that it was never said that this also applies to geass from other code, so this point is confused and can't be used to motivate others theories.

I recognize that Lelouch wanted to die to atone fot his sins, so I think that maybe the code was activated after his death, not for his porpuse, and now he is with CC.
Of course I know that the perfect ending is whit his death, but this is MY theory, and everyone can believe in what he wants (in fact the end it's vague)

I like to think Lelouch is alive by obtaining Charles Geass crest. Lelouch and Zero are two different displayed personas by Lelouch to the world, Zero was always seen as a hero and Lelouch through the finale of the 2nd season was seen as all that is wrong with the world, war, hate, corruption etc. The idea of of Lelouch 'definitely dying' was all of the portrayal of 'Lelouch' as previously mentioned, dying from the world, which is stated that the world started progressing towards peace after his 'death'. I believe he lives with CC undercover and after all his sacrifices for everyone he cared for to have their goals be obtained he finally got to be live in peace.

I watched this anime in the early 2000s, yet here I am because I sometimes think about this. It honestly doesn't really seem like the creator knew what he wanted, but leaned towards Lelouch dying, otherwise why make the Japanese ending of the anime appear as such? Dunno but at least he's alive in other routes (prolly because again, the creator doesn't know what he wants). Nonetheless it's nice to see someone make a good video about this in 2023. Thanks for the watch!

@Paradox-es3bl
@Paradox-es3bl - 15.04.2023 16:39

Based on the end of the anime, I think there's Zero (pun intended) chance Lelouch is 100% dead. And I do just mean R2. C.C. is talking to him in SOME form. And I don't think she's the type to just be "talking to an angel or ghost." So, either he's the cart driver, or he's in her head like his mother was. But since that wasn't HIS Geass power, I have no idea how that would've activated... and even assuming it DID somehow... there's no guarantee he could actually switch into another body. Because it wasn't his power.

One thing that could actually work... is maybe Charles could've removed C.C.'s Code enough (or done enough damage) that she was allowed a Geass again... but this time somehow she ended up with Marianne's instead of the ability to make everyone love her.

Honestly, I think that's way more convoluted than Lelouch either faking his death, which he's surely capable of... 5ccs of Tetrodotoxin to slow his heart rate enough to be imperceptible for a few minutes, and Suzaku being precise enough to not actually hit his heart but appearing to... or Lelouch having Charles's code. Or even C.C.'s by then. Like, instead of Lelouch taking her Code and killing her... couldn't he just take her Code and leave her to age and die naturally? She'd get like ~60 years as a normal human... and die with a smile beside him/in his arms. I don't see why he's need Charles's Code nor why taking C.C.'s would guarantee her immediate death. The series doesn't seem to ever outright state that a Geass user taking someone's Code INSTANTLY kills them, like removing a Tailed Beast from a Jinchuuriki is supposed to... (If Sakura isn't around, being useful and saving the entire damn series. Take that, Sakura haters)... so why not just allow her a normal life and death? Happy end.

So on a very base level I just think the original timeline argument is flawed. I know we all love to talk about "creator quotes", but in an anime like this it's just flatly untrue, the same man that said Lelouch died ALSO said he didn't plan for the R2 timeskip and it was due to the changing time slot for it's TV premier. (Look up "Code Geass interview Celiss Galvea")
They don't have the power to decide canon, like I said the guy people quote himself complained about the power upper management had.

Also saying that "it was meant to be open ended" is for the movies has the same problem, we as viewers are deciding what "counts" and what "doesn't", this doesn't "count" because "it was probably said because of the movie", something unprovable.

Now to be clear, I don't care either way, plenty of AU's like manga or games where he lives, movie resurrection, or just fanfiction, always love those. If I need him to survive, which I don't, I have options. But I do just flatly reject trying to use some creator quotes that fit their narrative and treating them as gospel and just rejecting anything else.
Especially since, in just the anime, there are a lot of interesting debates on the whole situation with Code. Like why do we never see someone get Code? Why is it the scene will show C.C. in the church and everything before and after she gets Code, but not that moment itself, and why does it never cut to like a 5 second flashback of Charles getting the Code. We still have no idea how that works, how the Geass User takes the Code or the processes involved, a much more interesting debate on both sides than just saying "creator said ___ so stop thinking".
There is no proof in the anime continuity that Lelouch couldn't have gotten Code and it just didn't activate. Or C's World could resurrect him for 'tomorrow'. Or C.C. giving him her Code after he was stabbed. Or any number of other purely made up explanations that just aren't covered.
But there's also nothing saying any of that did happen. Maybe he did just die and that was that. That's fine to, although less to talk about.

If you want to make a video on the debunking of the theory that he has a code (which is a fine idea), I suggest you restrict it to the anime only.
After all, the theory was made about the anime and nothing else.
And the extra timelines only just muddle the issue without having any relevance to the anime.
No need to needlessly complicate matters

Why not use the translation of the "Geass Memories" tweets delivered by the fandom document? That translation was done by fans who actually speak Japanese and which is obviously better than some google translation.

As for Taniguchi's words during the movie promotion, you correctly point out the contradiction with everything they've ever said before. He actually implicitly rescinded that promotion statement by later confirming that the option of keeping Lelouch alive was never even considered when they made the anime.
So we can be sure that his words during the movie promotion were indeed just for hype and have no other value.

As for Lelouch in the movies, he actually does NOT have a code, flawed or otherwise.
C.C. herself even says so when she talks to Kallen.
We know from the anime (and the movies didn't change this) that you acquire a code by EXCHANGING your geass for it (Turn 15), and C.C. explains to Kallen that the issue of Lelouch exchanging his geass for a code was never resolved, i.e. he doesn't have a code.
So, at first she wondered about the possibility of Lelouch having Charles's code, but then she points out he still has a geass which is impossible for code bearers, and then concludes her explanation saying that he doesn't have a code.
This is also the only way you can make the movie fit with the lore of codes established by the anime (and the movies), and it also fits perfectly with what we see in the movie itself, i.e. the power of Lelouch's mark functions completely differently than codes do (as you explained in the video).
And let's not forget the show staff have called this a "Failed One", not a code or "flawed code" or even "failed code", the word code is never used! Note that even the movie itself never refers to Lelouch's new power as a code of any sorts. Thinking it's a code of sorts is a big misunderstanding of the movie which repeatedly shows us that this Failed One had completely different properties and effects than codes.
I think the whole misunderstanding of "it's a flawed code" comes from some people desperately wanting Lelouch to have some sort of code so they can claim their debunked theory of the anime was right after all, and then this misinformation became part of the echochambers of fandoms and thus it keeps getting repeated and most people stop questioning it obvious errors.

The relevance of "Renya of Darkness" to the movies is doubtful, seeing that the movies are a universe which is completely separate from the anime universe to which "Renya of Darkness" belongs

I think he did die. Moreover, I think that he did inherit charles's code, but passed it to Suzaku (which would admittedly require a lot to happen offscreen).

Another interesting thing to consider is what would Suzaku's geass power be if he recieved one? The power given to someone seems to align closely with their desires; Lelouche wanted to lead a war and was given a power to compel obedience, Charles wanted to end the Britanian infighting and was given the power to rewrite history, C.C. wanted to experience compassion and was given the power to compel love, Bismark wanted to be a great warrior and was given the power to see what his opponents will do.

But what would happen if someone's desires were manipulated by Lelouche's geass? I think that Suzaku's geass may have been something akin to the immortality part of a code, which would explain how he survived the lancelot explosion. It would also make him an even better candidate for taking the role of Zero, because there wouldn't need to be any consideration to who would succeed Suzaku.
