Listening to the residents tell you why they live here was the most interesting. It reminded me much of my experiences of Alaska. First of all there are far fewer people in these cold regions than the more temperate regions. In Alaska people seemed to be more welcoming, more compassionate. I believe it may have something to do with the region. When you live on the brink of civilization maybe you have a different appreciation of others.

Every video I watch by so many different people show the same abandoned buildings over and over and over again everything is gloom and despair. You show such a bright and happy side of Vorkuta and you can see it in the young, that it will be the young and the brilliant entrepreneurs who will make the city thrive once again. Still a beautiful city, mostly used as a worker city cause of the local coal mines, same thing happens in America but yet no one talks about it, they act like america is the happiest and russia is the saddest when frankly russians are no diffrent, yes russians are better but they are not diffrent from us americans

I can't imagine the lives of the people who built Vorkuta- the roads, buildings, power, sewer lines, etc. Incredible..
Anyone who contributed to the creation of Vorkuta are heroes!

I recently read cilka’s journey about an auschwitz and vortuka gulag survivor during WW2. Really good book if anyone is interested. I just can’t imagine how the prisoners survived living in the gulag.

Interesting place. I like to visit places like that. You appreciate the small things in life more. I have a sport house above the arctic circle where it can get below -50 Celsius. Also very peaceful place with friendly people.
