I think this kit needs a piece of fatwood in it. I have several kits that are more comprehensive than this one and they all have a chunk of fatwood in them. Fatwood is the ultimate waterproof and all natural tinder.

I usually carry some fatwood in an Altoids tins also.

I’m thinking of putting some riggers gloves in my kit to protect my hands while snapping up tinder & so I don’t get burned while placing things on or off the fire. Haven’t seen anyone else use gloves what do u think?

I have a few fire plugs & 2” cuttings of fire starting tape. They weigh almost nothing and they’ll light with a spark or flame.

I’ve heard SO many preppers say a fresnel lens ‘magnifies the sun. They really don’t unless you’re using them incorrectly! The fresnel lens is used to FOCUS the sun into a pinpoint using refraction of light. Sounds pedantic, but it’s an important difference. Magnifying the sun would make the sun bigger and not at all focus the light energy into a pinpoint, accomplishing the very opposite of what we are trying to achieve.

I have the Vaseline with cotton balls and I have fat wood. Lots of fat wood. If one won’t start then I have the other to fall back on.
