They called them buffalo soldiers because if the Rebels shot them, the Union could loot their bodies for meat, and if they won, it was a free victory for the Yankees. Too much sensationalism in modern retelling of the war, literally Africans that didn't know any English were being shipped to the Union to fight a war that had noting to do with them, Bob Marley even sang a pop song about it

Imagine that finally you have escaped slavery in the south and have guns and arr killing your former masters and freeing your brothers . Not all heroes wear capes ....

Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation freeing slaves for 1 reason...
He knew he could get an army of cheap infantry men willing to fight for his cause and save the Union.
Lincoln didn't give 2 sheets about freeing blacks. His own quotes reveal so.

Whites were the first slavery in North America because it wasn't USA at that time. It was controlled by the British and the Irish, Scottish and some British were the first Slavery and don't ever forget that.

During the Civil War, black troops were often assigned tough, dirty jobs like digging trenches. Black regiments were commonly issued inferior equipment and were sometimes given inadequate medical treatment in racially segregated hospitals. African-American troops were paid less than white soldiers.

Union soldiers were denied any veteran benefits. Freedman bank stole trillions.

The best color regiment is the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment.

I have at least a dozen ancestors who fought in the Civil War. They were assigned to the “Colored Troops” infantry regiments. My 3rd great grandfather Moses Hammond was given land abandoned by former plantation owners in Mt Airy, MD.

They were transferred to Indian country where they were called Buffalo soldiers these were outpost where white solders did not want to serve so they fulfilled a purpose
