While most of your tips are fantastic, I strongly disagree with one of them. Holding your work in your lap will not decrease the strain on your neck, it actually increases it because you are compressing the disc between the two vertebrae to look downward while creating a constant prolonged stretch to the muscles and tendons in the back of your neck and across your shoulders. I once did a graphgan that took 9 months and the constant compression on one edge of the disc caused it to herniate out one side of the vertebra putting me in the hospital for 19 days needing surgery and physical therapy. According to orthopedic doctors the best posture for anyone who does crafts regardless of what kind is to have your work either on a table or propped up by pillows to a level where you can see what your doing but basically holding your head level as if to look straight forward. This takes pressure off both the neck and the shoulders. If you need to put pillows on your armrests to raise your arms so that they are at your side with your elbow bent at 45 degree angle do so (this is the same posture they always taught in typing classes to avoid upper back strain.) After I recovered from my surgery my husband made me a table on wheels that is wide enough to roll over the top of recliner so that I can hold my work up and look forward and it has not only reduced shoulder and neck pain but made me faster.

I love your energy so much, i really wanted to come meet you at the last event you were in ohio, i didn't have the funds and found out about it last minute. I have been saving my money to take a class in shaker at around the table yarns, i am left handed and my dream is to master crocheting, its so easy to give up and hard to keep going especially when I feel like everything I try is an epic fail. I choose to keep following my dream i want to be good at this so badly i havent wanted anything so much in my life and i finally kno what it is. Thank you

All excellent advice! I’m a relative newbie and really appreciate all this great information- especially the clear callout on posture and repetitive injuries. I had to walk away from embroidery due to those issues and want to ensure I keep going on this new hobby. Thank you!

My strange tip: have multiple projects in different stages. I know it sounds like everything will take longer to finish, but if you have different projects preferably using different techniques or tensions you can spend longer crafting before you get sore because you are spreading the load on your body a bit more, and that way if you get stuck on something "need to look at this in daylight" "need to work out what went wrong and frog back" "need to wait for this garment that I'm blocking to dry before I sew the seams" you've got something else you can be doing.

I used to be a pencil holder when I started but eventually switched to the knife hold bc the pencil hold started giving me sore bumps on my fingers from the pressure and friction of the hook 😢
Its a shame cause I do feel I was faster when I did it that way but I prefer non painful bumpy fingers

Specialist is available.
I’m rebuilding my inner core and crochet is very important.
So I will be stopping by more often for your great projects &

One of the most ironic tips I have:
stitching fast takes time
practice makes perfect
time makes terrific
You have to have experience, practice, and patience to grow up to being a fast and perfected crocheter! Barely anyone can get it right on their first couple times <3

a new trick I have found is when making my cakes out of the yarn skeins, I will take the center pull and wrap it over the label from the yarn. It serves multiple purposes, 1. to keep track of the center pull yarn, and 2. keeps the information on what yarn color, dye lot, ect.

For using a skein from the outside I use the 'Wool Jeanie'. It is perfect whether I'm crocheting continuously or pulling the yarn. And, it doesn't snag the wool at the bottom.
