These things had alot of downsides but their answer to m-loc was AMAZING. snap in peripherals that are instantly zeroed. Its a shame these rifles didnt get a civilian release

I was in the army during that time, the Barrels with melt after a 1000 rounds or so, there was too many malfunctions and to top it off it takes too long to do a full breakdown and clean.

That rifle does not have the accessory capabilities to be a good combat weapon . Just watching it cycle it looked like that gas system was only just capable of cycling the bolt which may cause problems when it get's real dirty inside the gas tube and port . Safety looks badly positioned and you have to change your grip to use it Sorry but it looks like junk to me . H&K may have been setup to fail . Some commercial tests are not really like real combat conditions .

If the refusal to adopt the XM-8 inadvertently gave us the new M-7, I'm okay with that. The new cartridge is more or less future proofed for next-gen body armor, something we can't expect 5.56 to be ready to beat.

The XM-8 was more or less just a more reliable take on the M-4 with a major drawback in the form of those proprietary mounts. I think more than a few people really underestimate how much those proprietary mounting locations worked against this weapon when it was being considered for adoption.

Bureaucratic red tape comes in when the army wants a new rifle. But you've got the navy pissing away billions and then cancelling projects.
