Since two different terms exists, just splt myth and reality from each other. Call the fictional myth "Ninja" and the real one "Shinobi" and never mix up the terms. The ninja can keep all the fantasy super powers without any care to historical facts, while the shinobi will be based only on historical sources, problem solved.

this video is inaccurate. ok there may not be evidence for assassinations but there are plenty of recorded attempts by shinobi that failed. and you really think daimyos would have built floors on springs that make noises when you walk on them if the threat of assassination wasnt real? also assassinations are clearly mentioned in the bansenshukai. and at the very least they very clearly killed guards at least that got in the way of their mission, and killed guard dogs.

I think the Ninjas were those that protected the castle for their lord. If the samurai can't protect perhaps the ninja can be at service. But they can also be one that watch their lords back. Like the famous Hattori Hanzo who is Ieyasu's loyal servant and ninja that live and die in his service. There many times Hanzo has saved Ieyasu's life and continues to be his loyal ninja along side with Tadakatsu Hond and his daughter Ina Honda. Btw could you talk a bit of the archers of Japan? Especially Ina Honda the famous daughter of Tadakatsu Honda. :D In the game I think she pretty and skilled archer in battle.

This still raises a few questions though. Why is there a famous Ninja House in the Shiga Prefecture of Japan.
