I bet some woke activists will claim that the nobles hated King Edward II because he was gay.

Kind of amazing the transition between Edward I to Edward II to Edward III. You can make the argument that E1 and E3 are among the best kings England had. You can also make the argument that E2 was among the worst. It just goes to show that a heredity model doesn't give you very consistent leadership.

Imagine being a French peasant in Northern France during this period, thinking of starting a family, maybe a little business, minor house extension & along comes Edward III for the umpteenth time with his claims on the French crown!!!!!!! Stuff of nightmares.

No punishment for the kids. So no respect. And when the parents of the kids are teens, so mostly no respect for people, then their kids are just learning this attitude.

I wish there were more series that focused on on the Plantagenet dynasty similar to the Tudor dynasty. I’ve read Phillipa Gregory book series on the war of the roses the White Queen being my favorite and Alison Weir book on Katherine Swynford famed mistress turned wife of John of Gaunt. The Plantagenets we’re England’s longest ruling family there have been a few books adapted into great series like pillars of the earth and a world without end but they are still underrated. I hope to see more of the Plantagenet legacy as one documentary put it “the warrior kings of England”.

Ugh, I really hate the term “The Hundred Years War” (which was a historiographical term that was first used many centuries after the France reclaimed Calais in 1558), because on-again/off-again conflicts with France were nothing new by the time Edward III was fighting in France. Ever since the Norman conquest of 1066, England & France had been engrossed in countless battles & armed conflict over territory. Just go back to episodes on the Angevin Empire for a little reminder about that. What was going on in Edward IIIs campaign wasn’t much different to what, Henry I, Henry II, Richard the Lionheart, or John were dealing with when it came to fighting France over territory (regardless of his claim for fighting being different from theirs). Helen Castor is the only historian I’ve heard who’s actually astute enough to take a step back from accepting prescibed terminology, & take note of how flawed the term “Hundred Years War” is for this very reason.

So anytime someone likes to bring up 🧐 “actually, The Hundred Years War lasted for 116 years.”, I respond with 😒 “no, actually it lasted for about 5 centuries”.

So that’s my only complaint with the way this was presented. Edward III did not start the Hundred Years’ War with France… he continued a centuries-old ongoing war with France, now armed with the claim that he was the rightful king of France as another feather in his cap

Anymore info on the English Longbow? I read an article years ago that stated a Longbow archer's arrow could pin a soldier's leg to his mount at a distance of 300 yards.

To the people who lived in that time period I lift my hat off to them. Land grab, the shedding of blood, murder, hate, having wealth galore and fighting wars was the order of the day. What a terrible time people lived through. They operated as if they were God....We came on this earth and saw everything, we did not bring one thing here with us and when we are ready to go, we take nothing with us..I wonder if they are burning in hell for their evil deeds!!

You presented an excellent account of Edward III. The only point I would make is to that you might have mentioned he made an alliance with Portugal formulated in 1373. It is the oldest alliance in the world between two nations.

Who narrated this?? It is extremely monotone without any pauses as if he just reading and reading without full stops or thought or intonation in his voice and therefore very difficult to listen to and absorb the information. I’m only 20 minutes in and already cannot stand to hear anymore. Highly irritating as I actually want to listen to and learn from this documentary.

I am a United States Citizen, born here, and consider myself an American, however in my ancestry--my father is the 8th cousin second removed to Lady Diana. WE have intersecting relatives in King Henry the 8ths court as well. WE are also related to relatives in early Jamestown, and related to the Powhattan Indians as well. I also had great, great great, great great grandfather who fought in the Revolutionary War with George Washington. I find these relationships interesting in view of my interest of history! While my country seems to have really lionized King Henry the 8th--all I see from his reign is breaking away from the Roman Catholic church in order to divorce his wives, get remarried and some of them he beheaded through subterfuge. He seemed to spend his time womanizing trying for an heir to this thrown.

Watching this documentary--which is so informative, I find that King Edward 3rd had to be the most interesting, progressive king England ever had, in that he made decisions that have lasted into the 21st century! I find this amazing. I discount the warring activities, as during the medieval times, this was the way of things. One cannot measure the moral standards of that time and warfare against today's standards and policies and warfare. it was a different time, and every country of that time fought for territory and for titles and for land. It was the way of things. His reforms for government, law, and economy and standardizing the language of the country for all of these areas of government and for the people--are amazing achievements, which are long lasting into 2023! I think a movie should be made on THIS king's life and those reforms he did--why not a mini series on his life? Guess it is not sexy enough, not enough fornication in the bedroom perhaps. Too bad. This is the best monarch England had in my opinion.

Thanks for the documentary!

These are all descendants of Norman Barons and lords that conquered England in 1066. The English or rather the Anglo Saxon royalty had been vanquished forever and the ordinary English folk reduced to serfdom little more than slaves serving the interests of their Norman, Flemish, Frankish and Breton overlords - the upper classes. That dispensation has gone on to this day and can be seen in today’s subservient deference of the English working classes (former serfs) and the English middle classes (former Burghers) towards the upper classes (feudal lords). Nothing much has changed since 1066.

I do not think Edward III was England’s King at all. He is seen as that by the English because he and the Black Prince brought back great booties which they achieved by looting, pillaging, raping and burning France. Do yo really believe that is greatness?
