I think the term would be Anti-villain, much like how an anti-hero is a hero willing to do perhaps not good things to achieve a good result, an anti-villain is typically a villain who usually does good things in pursuit of a negative result.
Or in other words, a guy doing good deed specifically to end up befitting himself.

personally i think about it like in season 3 where stormfront is just shown for like 10 min during the whole season, the same will probably happen to Solder Boy in season 4 but in season 5 is where im expecting him to make a BIG return. just a theory tho, and would be more time to build hype.

This is a show where the "good guys" are literally terrorists and serial killers who target an group of people for the crime of being experimented on as children by a near untouchable corporation. Oh and their leader is outright genocidal and willing to turn on his own friends without batting an eye to accomplish his goals...

I saw a tweet that talked about how the evil characters are so likeable and thinking it was unintentional by the writers and used soldier boy as an example, but as you talked about; soldier boy was written to be likeable with his charisma, humour, and sympathetic qualities.

Too bad the season 3 finale of the boys sucked

Jensen is so underrated as an actor, he's one of the main reasons I kept watching Supernatural after so many seasons haha hopefully we do get to see more of this character!

Soldier Boy is not as evil as Homelander because Soldier Boy believes he is doing what is right.
Homelander doesn't give a shite....Homelander is simply doing whatever he wants at any given moment and doesn't care or consider it in terms of right or wrong.

Here's a few bits about Soldier Boy that I've personally noticed from watching Season 3:
1, Soldier Boy is different from Homelander in that Soldier Boy, whilst many of the things he does are evil and whilst he has put innocent people in danger, he believes that the evil things he does are justified because his motivations and his intent is in his point of view "good". That said, you could argue that Soldier Boy has a bit of a distorted sense of good and evil.

Homelander on the other hand, knows what he is doing is evil, he knowingly causes harm to innocent people, is unapologetic and he doesn't care that he's evil.

2, Soldier Boy honoured his deal with Butcher even though you could argue that he had good enough reason to back out of that deal.

It was Homelander who killed Black Noir for his father Soldier Boy and Soldier Boy clearly wanted a relationship with his son Homelander and his grandson Ryan but opted to remain focused on the mission and opted to finish his part of the deal.

Butcher on the other hand had no reason to backout of the deal, let alone essentially save Homelander from Soldier Boy considering what Homelander did to his wife, yet Butcher backstabbed Soldier Boy in the deal Butcher himself made in part due to his concern for ryan.

Note: It's understandable why Butcher wanted to protect Ryan but here's the thing, Vought Tower was already largely evacuated of civilians and non-Supes (yeah there were still Vought PMCs in the buiding but do you really care about them) and had Soldier Boy exploded, the other Supes in the building such as Ryan, Homelander, Starlight, Kimiko and Maev wouldn't have necessarily died. Likely they would have been injured but they would have still lived albeit, they would have lost their powers.

3, Soldier Boy was a necessary evil as Homelander was too dangerous to be left alive.

The danger Homelander posed was not so much his super strength and laser vision but rather his intelligence, his mobs of fanatic supporters and his overall toxic public influence, in which his very name could cause violence (case in point, Homelander being mentioned at Victoria Neuman's event at Godolkin University caused fighting between pro and anti Homelander students in the auditorium).

Soldier Boy was their best bet at doing away with Homelander, yet Butcher sabotaged this.

The only redeeming quality Homelander has is that he is a genuinely loving father who does genuinely care for his son Ryan and has shown that he could care for others namely Klara (Stormfront). Other than that, there is no reason why anyone should hesitate in getting rid of Homelander if given the chance.

Jensen did a phenomenal job

I don't think Soldier Boy is evil. He might be an asshole or just mentally messed up...or both, but he's not evil. Like I was watching and thinking damn, he was abusive to BN and his old crew, but is he Homelander...well...not yet anyway. Like I said, he was cold and almost evil in his "Past Life," but when he comes back, he just seems like a retired, old, (sexy) vet. I don't think we got much from him, anyway. He was only in three episodes and all we mostly know is his past. He used to be abusive to his team (But he was abused as a kid plus he has the V, so it makes sense), he came from an abusive father who didn't think he was "worthy" to be his son and that he wanted to kill his team for ratting on him to the Russians where he would then be abused for a LONG time. We do know as well that he is a good soldier, considering he "tried" to follow Butcher's orders and that he has mental issues (PTSD). That's why I hope he will be in season 4 and we get to see more of him, to see more of his character and and get a better idea of him. Jenson was awesome though! Especially with the rest of the crew. He was like Negan when he came on TWD. He fit right in!! 😄 As of last season though, he was fine compared to the rest of the Supes. He was funny, and actually more human than the rest of the Supes to me.

Ok bad person, yes but villain no. The two aren't mutually exclusive. "I didn't mean to hurt those people." Soldier boy could have shrugged it off, taken no responsibility, or deflected blame which is how homelander handles those situations. Instead Soldier boy seemed to genuinely feel guilty about the damage he caused, and needed to say that. He appeared completely sincere, and the fact that he said it to hughie a man he had nothing but contempt for speaks volumes.

Soldier Boy woudl be looked at as more of an unlikeable douchebag if his scenes abusing Noir and the squad weren't animated

I think he's less of a villain & more of an antihero. He does the right thing for the wrong reasons and did a lot of terrible things in the past.

Butcher is such a cuck. That last episode really let me down. SB did everything he said he was going to do. A man of his word, we’re running out of those. Soldier Boy was right.

Hughie is the true hero of the series since he is the one trying to do what is right. Where Butcher fit more into an Anti-Hero. Butcher will do anything to takedown Homelander no matter what it will cost him.

I view soldier boy a lot like Big Boss from Metal Gear. They aren’t good per say but there is a level to them where you can see how their twisted sense of justice works.
