Platoon is horrible compared to Full Metal Jacket
Ответитьsiskel was correct
ОтветитьYall know it's a better show when they disagree so Ebert not liking it is want you want to hear
ОтветитьLol.
Lmao even.
I think Ebert is spot on here.
For me, Full Metal Jacket is one of Kubrick's weakest films.
He hated the fat shaming period..
ОтветитьIt would have been helpful if the guys mentioned where they saw basic training scenes like this before. I have no idea to what they are referring.
ОтветитьEbert really dives into the I-Got-It-Wrong buffet this time around. 😎
ОтветитьWasn't Dr. Strangelove 1964?
Ответить'Private Ebert, Wtf on God's green earth were you thinking about when you gave such a shitload of a film review!!!!!'. 'And is that a goddamm jelly donut in your footlocker!?' 😅
ОтветитьI used to watch this show on tv.
ОтветитьI agree with Siskel on this film.
ОтветитьI can clearly remember watching this episode with my parents when it premiered. . They would watch every week.
ОтветитьVery rarely do I side with Siskel on the disagreements, but, Ebert definitely got this one wrong. I wonder if they ever recanted on reviews after a second watch?
Ответить"Who said that? Who the f**k said that about my film?" -- Gunnery Sgt. Hartman
ОтветитьSiskel got it right.
Ответитьif you want to get a feel for what its like to be 'in-the-shit' no other film captures it as well as Kubrick
Ответитьsiskel got it right for once. ebert was waaaaay off
ОтветитьEbert's review of this and Blue Velvet have been shown by history to be completely wrong. Even the best critics are not reliable and today's critics are worse.
ОтветитьYeah, I'm with Gene on this one. I miss these guys so much; modern reviewers can't hold a candle to these guys.
ОтветитьThis is the best movie about Vietnam. Ebert, I will never listen to you again. 😅 This is Kubrick at his best. Remember, these two didn't like Butch Cassidy.
ОтветитьI think Ebert is too woke
ОтветитьWhen I took my friends to see this movie at the theater I made sure they were good and stoned on the way over. We sat right in front, didn't say a word until the very end. When it was over and cut to black, one of my friends just looked at me and said, 'why the fuck did you bring us here?'
I said because if you don't know what happened over there they could just as easily send you somewhere else to do the same shit if you're not paying attention.
Then again corrupt politicians have no problem sending clueless young men to do their bidding in fucked up places
Ebert was off on this film
Ответить"it fails in comparison to Platoon" I don't think so
ОтветитьEberts not wrong but he doesn't get into why the film is a piece of shit. Its not just the novelty, it makes comments that show clearly Kubrick didn't know what he was talking about. "the hunfredyard stare" is NOT a look asoldier gets where he's "seeing beyond" - its combat fatigue where hesready to have a breakdown
Where did the public first come across this phrase? In a painting named "THE THOUSAND YARD STARE" which depucts a soldier on the verge of breakdown. When Kubrick has his character syate things like this they are imparting bullshot to the audience - we're not suppised to think the soldier doesn't know what he's talking about. Other aspects abput the movie are equally full of it, but also grotesque and we have Stanley Kubrick to thank now for introducing"love you long time" to the culture that didn't need any more excuses in order to be racist, bigoted and misogynist.
This isn't the first time a noted director made an acclaimed film that was full of shit. Coppola did audiences no favors in THE GODFATHER withits nonsensical plot elements - the son wa expecyed to kill his pwn father by the villain? No. Or the lifelong enforcer is sent to defect to the opposing family? Or worst of all, thr basics - conflating the Italian family with mob families that try to kill each other. Jusy a stupid stupid movie. Both of them - well liked but absolute crap.
"Not a great movie" aged like milk.
ОтветитьEbert worst review
ОтветитьI don’t remember the speech about JFK. Did I see some edited version of that movie?
ОтветитьNon of these fools have slightest clue shahahaha
ОтветитьOnce again...WRONG!
ОтветитьCommon Siskel W
ОтветитьRoger must have been having a bad day when he saw it. yes we've seen basic training scenes before, but these make the ones in An Office And A Gentleman look like Hallmark Network material.
But it's important to understand the context. By the summer of 1987 people were starting to suffer from Vietnam fatigue at the movies. There had been so many of them in the previous 10 years that it almost seemed like Kubrick was just late to the party.
I totally agree with Roger Ebert. Full Metal Jacket was made in an era of Vietnam war movies the 1980s. THe movie was shot in England and it shows with the dull light that exists outside in England for most of the year. In Vietnam being closer to the equator the sky is different more pronounced brighter light. The sharp eyed movie goer will spot the difference immediately. The Set design does not make you feel you are in Vietnam. I think Kubrick lost his magic touch by this stage trying to tackle material that had been shot and done better by other directors a real shame. This movie was a very weak effort from Kubrick. The only good thing I will say about is its not a bad movie but its not that great a movie either. By 1987 movie audiences had seen a range of really good Vietnam war themed movies they did not need to see another one. I agree 100 percent with Roger Ebert. Its my thoughts exactly.
ОтветитьI think you might have to be a veteran to recognize Full Metal Jacket for the absolute masterpiece it was and still is.
ОтветитьWow they got this one WRONG
ОтветитьThe fat dude was so wrong. What an idiot, full metal jacket was spectacular.
ОтветитьI love Ebert. This is one of his biggest missises along with Day of the Dead.
ОтветитьMannn Army Veteran.. Reminds me of Basic Training in FT SILL AKA FT KILL.. MANNNN MANNNN MANNNN HOOOOAHHHH!!! LOVEUP
ОтветитьEbert isn’t wrong here, I thought FMJ was Kubricks worst, except for the boot camp sequence
ОтветитьElbert was so wrong. Every Vietnam vet I ever spoke to despised “Platoon”. All the Marines I spoke to enjoyed “Full Metal Jacket”.
ОтветитьHistory proves he's wrong
ОтветитьPretty sure Ebert was a Draft Dodger, that's why he trashed Vietnam, movies. Lookup their review of Platoon..
ОтветитьMy brother with another marine servived at Hue;over-run,they confronted the enemy..hand to hand..while other's ran by them..then later, too tired to move, practically naked beat-up,bleeding they were later pulled out of the ditch and rescued."Today, may they Rest in Peace."note:other marine's(classmates/ relatives)who saw the movie agree to lots of scenes in it.however, they dont talk about it..unless asked.
ОтветитьEbert is a doofuss here.
ОтветитьAn opinion is like an *shole ...everyone has got one
ОтветитьEbert can feel bad about this movie because he relates to private Pyle …”a disgusting fat body” 😂
He cannot be a judge if he can’t put his personal feelings aside right 🤷🏻♂️
Weakness, pity, shame is all he can see and it hurt his feelings 🤦🏻♂️
One of the rare instances where Gene was absolutely right, and Roger just missed the entire point.
ОтветитьI have to agree with Siskel on this one
ОтветитьFull Metal Racket.
