It yook me three hours to explain things like this/systemic racism to my conservative/republican dad. I think he understands it maybe 10% better than he did. I got little ground with him. Its sad.

I remember one day I worked with a guy that lived in a country where they had no black people. His first experience was with them on a job in DC. He said he was shocked at how uncivilized they were compared to other people in this country. All the theft the crimes the brutality. Got his vehicles broken into three times. He said if this is the way they are he doesn't really want his family to be around them at all and even asked me if there was actually a place where they don't exist? He said growing up it was common knowledge that you always acted with respect because you were representing your people and your community from your parents. It's a matter of Pride and dignity respecting others. I often remember that experience.
So obviously there's a lot more going on than just Powers manipulating the system against a group of people. sometimes it just comes down to the matter of how you treat other people. stunning how sometimes people only want to see what they want to see.

I'm a Black man.... been one all my 67 years, and even I won't live where lots of Black folk live. Nope! Hell naw!! ESPECIALLY if there are multiples of Black males from 14 to 35. They....in general ...tear up neighborhoods...& put fear in the residents just by their being. Now....this may be racist as hell, but it's also very true....

This video says racially restrictive covenants were legal until 1968, but it fails to mention that the US Supreme Court ruled them unenforceable in 1948. Not to say there wasn’t de facto discrimination, but you need to be accurate too.

The original practice of redlining was racist. However, home ownership is not the be all and end all of SES, as this video tries to make it sound. Asian and Arab Americans also lag behind white Americans in home ownership, yet outperform whites in every other SES category. So it's hardly accurate to say that lack of accessibility to home ownership is what is causing the problem for certain groups. Other groups have been successful. I'm tired of this practice which ignores Asian and Arab Americans and the successes that we have had in the US despite discrimination. As a hardworking and successful minority, I'm tired of seeing people use discrimination as an excuse for struggles. I am a first generation immigrant and a minority. I've experienced plenty of discrimination, both in the military and in civilian life. I was successful in both worlds, promoting ahead of my peers in the Army and then starting a successful career in healthcare since leaving the military.

People keep telling me "oh, well maybe you haven't experienced the same discrimination or struggle". The thing is that I have. I've been told that I wouldn't be promoted because of my race. I put my head down, worked hard and made it so that they couldn't NOT promote me. I scored a 314 on my PT Test (extended scale), shot 40/40 with both hands (just to prove I really was that good a shot) and spent hours after duty hours every day studying my FM's and TM's to be a subject matter expert on damn near everything my platoon operated. That's how you succeed. Hardwork, determination and finding ways to succeed, not excuses for failure. If you do this, in the USA, there is a very high chance that you will be successful. Yes, some people have to work harder for success (because of race, social status or disability), but the same truth holds. If you do the hardwork, you will probably succeed. If you don't, then don't cry about struggling.

Nonsense. There’s no such things as redlining. You can say “red” meant foreign born people blah blah blah. BS. It’s human behavior. Banks, including black owned banks, didn’t want to invest in areas that had a low ROI. Why would it have low ROI? Because most other people don’t want to live there thereby depressing demand. How do we know this to be true? Go to any black or Hispanic neighborhood and find me the wealthy people who moved in. The rich or maybe not even rich…go find the r middle class white, Indian, Chinese who willfully bought a home in a crime ridden predominantly black or Hispanic neighborhood. When the founder of BLM bought homes where did she splurge? In black neighborhoods? To drive up the home prices around her too? Nope. She moved far far away.
It’s not “redlining”. It’s not racism. It’s human behavior and it’s common sense.

How about the voting habits? How many those areas are governed and lead by democrats? Crime rate? Culture? Father involved in their lives? How about the fact that black women abort their babies at much higher rates than any other race? Why is that? How about the black on black crime rate versus the white on white crime? Percentage of blacks graduating high school and college? Include these things in your videos dude. I'm a minority and I don't have that victim mindset, I refuse to believe this nation is inherently racist just because YOU say it is. I'm living a much better life than my father, and my father's father. I also made better decisions than they did, and that benefited me thus far. Stop preaching this garbage, if you don't like your city, look at who is running it, and look at who is governing the state. If you do not like it, move. Just like people in California and New York are moving into red states in droves. Open your eyes, removed that racist lens/filter and you'll realize what you have to do to live a better life and not see race. Because I don't see race, I see humans who made good or bad decisions. We're imperfect beings. However, when I'm forced to watch videos like this for "education" purposes (*cough) University discussions online, I just shake my head because this is pathetic. We're in America. You thank God you're not in Cuba or any other nation that doesn't have freedom of speech.

If anyone is interested in further research and understanding, there is a book and audio book that explains that history in intensive detail; it is called 'The Color of Law A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America' by Richard Rothstein. I just listened to the audio book and wow... it is nothing we will learn in our USA schools, nor colleges or Universities unless one is majoring in economic social justice type classes. Hidden history for sure.

There's so many problems with this video. The fact that poor whites seem to be victims of red lining suggests this is a class issue, not a race issue. This video also provides very few sources and basically asks you to trust that they have gotten the sources and the correct interpretation, right in the first place. The primary issue here is that, as they admit in this video, these issues have been going on for, in some cases, 70-100 years. What sort of solutions have already been tried in different places? Why haven't they worked? What culpability do black people have for their own conditions and why are their own efforts so unsuccessful? Bashing white people is so boringly predictable and incredibly popular among the mainstream establishment.

This is an inversion of the truth. Every cause they pointed to was a response to a problem that already existed but I'm glad to hear that these folks are deciding to take responsibility for the safety of their own community Into their own hands because it looked at first like they were exploiting the lack of police cooperation by committing even more crime and perpetuating a violent lawless society that is never responsible for anything.

Now that the country was fully segregated and memories of a non-segregated country were behind every white under 40, where blacks for 50 years had been pushed into sharecropping or housemaiding in the South or forced into non-white areas in the North and Midwest because sundown laws pushed them all out of white towns when trying to migrate for better jobs, FDR creates the New White Deal. IT rapidly creates Social Security immediately for managerial whites in the upper class and backs housing for whites, formalizing the sundown laws into redlining laws.
If you would do a modicum of research like I did to overcome my brainwashed past, and get passed the gaslighting of everyone around you, then you can see that Woodrow Wilson, a Democrat, was a bigot who wrote praise of the Klan, and FDR segregated the navy as his undersecretary. While it’s generally true after 1964 the Democrats started to “absorb” blacks and become what appears to be the pro-civil rights party and the Republicans now the “racist” party, it is more true in reverse before that time period. The Democrats were the racist anti-black party since the 1840, having lost their abolitionist branch to the Republicans, a startup, that then became the pro-civil rights party for the next hundred years. That is why the Republican Eisenhower, passed the 1957 Civil Rights Acts and FDR created a lasting legacy that looks socialist but in actually pro-capitalist anti-black.
