It would be nice to take the time and look up the name of the woman that made significant comments about the laundry room. Especially after you mentioned the other two gentlemen names

Hey guys,

I've been traveling back and forth from Nova Scotia, Canada to work in the oil sands of Northern Alberta, Canada for the last 7 years and have recently come into an opportunity to change my course and find my footing in the construction industry back home. I feel lucky to have stumbled onto your channel and this spec house series in particular. I'm coming into this particular episode at the same time as economic down turn shows it self again. I just wanted to reach out and let you know that I've gained an incredible amount of knowledge just in these first 23 episodes and take my hat off to you both, for how much information and honesty you've poured into these videos. I'm hooked on the series, I've got my note pad handy and my mind open. I hope since the airing of this episode, all is well and I'd like to thank you both again for putting this series together.

Cheers!

I have been a proponent of floor drains in second (and first) floor utility rooms since I was in my late twenties just starting out, and for some reason I have ALWAYS gotten pushback on it for some reason or other, usually around money. It does not make sense however, because , as you said, it eliminates a giant insurance claim when the washer inevitably fails. Insurance claims are never free. Some of my clients wanted a smooth transition to the utility room, and I came up with the idea of a quasi waterproof floor baseboard (tile, or even well caulked sheet vinyl/baseboard) with a linear drain "reverse" damming the doorway. And here you are with the same idea. THANK YOU for confirming my idea. It makes me feel good.

Good move removing the wall between the sink and toilet areas of the upstairs bathroom. Our house was made that way and it felt very cramped. We have recently removed those walls as part of our remodel and the bathrooms are much, much nicer.

Significant improvement! And if you have someone in the house who can't manage stairs, that "office" is their bedroom. The half-bathroom is a bit far away, but my grandmother lived to 102 and only got an ensuite in her nineties. A pity there's no shower downstairs, though. Not being able to shower in your own home isn't great.

You should make the office downstairs able to be used as a bedroom. I feel like you lose a lot of value by having such a large house only have 3 bedrooms.

Sir, I have a son that is very much interested on being an Architect. I am limited on how I can help him best to achieve his goal. I am from the medical field and I have no knowledge of which way to steer him into this goal of becoming an Architect. Would you have any advice on how I can help hom get there? Thanks In Advance from Texas.

Re architects, I never heard you disparage them. You merely said that in smaller projects a good draftsman is probably sufficient.

IMO, what an architect brings to the party is a fine sense of perspective and I think that is shown by the guy who red-lined your elevation drawing.

(Those columns are a throwback to 1940 era bungalows and look anachronistic to me.)

My wife and I spent many hours with plans on the internet before settling on a house for a lot we already owned. At age 68 I engaged a highly recommended contractor and community leader to build our chosen house in 2006. We love it and enjoy it so much now, but it was quite stressful. Though I told the contractor I would try not to second guess him, I had a lot of complaints about certain issues. He was right and so much smarter than me in so many ways. My deceased Dad was a talented architect and though I am a software specialist who had picked up a lot from my Dad, I didn't trust enough that the contractor knew more about how to ensure a dry basement, for example, and the relative importance certain details than I did. As I watch these videos and enjoy my lovely home, I respect and appreciate my contractor even more for dissuading me from what would have been bad decisions, for his ingenious adjustments here and there and for assuring me that some things I thought mattered really didn't.

Here is my comment very late in the game. If I am working from home which is the new norm anyway, when I am in the office and want to use the bathroom I've got quiet a journey, which involves going through the kitchen. If I were to buy this house I would punch a door though from the office to the garage just to avoid this. The door would also serve the purpose of extra egress.

This is some of THE BEST video content I have ever come across. You cover all the details and with such thoughtfulness that I come away feeling truly educated.

Very excited to continue learning on your channel. I suppose when this is over, I’ll have to learn more about blacksmithing!

Just now connected to your channel (too late for your build),. As a licensed, FEMALE CA/TX/HI Architect, please allow me to submit my recommendations for future projects: 1) Must have private Water Closet in Master Bath - no option; 2) no need for 2nd stair way {$10-20K savings?}; don’t add a 2nd stairway until you are designing a 5K sf house; 3) 2nd Stair area is much better used for Family Entry/Locker Room/Utility on 1st floor; office/kids monitored computer area or 4th Bedroom on 2nd floor. Homeowners want to to come home, drop their back packs, cell phone charging stations, etc.
3) You are missing the whole Great Room concept of connecting public/entertaining spaces with views-even from the Kitchen!
It was wonderful to hear how you learned to appreciate the professional advice from licensed Architects. Just as I learned a lot from you as a skilled concrete installation professional on your project. I’ve enjoyed your series thus far & look forward to catching up with the progress on your spec house build.

Typically, we are locating the Master Bedroom on the lower floor for “aging in place” concept. We typically have 3-car garages; 2 for cars, 1 for bicycles, etc.

At your urging Scott I've reached out to some people at ASHI, the American Society of Home Inspectors, to let them know about your video series. There is no question that new inspectors would gain a much better understanding of the home as a system by watching your videos. After 32 years of being an inspector, I find all your videos extremely informative. Your excellent ability to communicate what you are doing and why is superb! Hopefully ASHI will somehow incorporate your series into their educational processes. Thank you very much for your efforts! They are much appreciated. If all builders/contractors/trades took the time and effort to build a house well, my work load would be greatly reduced! I'm fine with that.........
