the only thing I know is, normally I can't hold my breath for a minute, but with the guided breathing video, I can hold my breath for 2 mins on the 3rd round while completely exhaled initially, feels awesome

I've committed myself to the WHM challenge for 40 days now, but can't say for sure that I'm feeling better. Every other week I suffer from a bad cold and now I have urinary tract irritation as well - I guess from the cold baths. (Have to go to the toilet every five minutes.) I never had such problems before. I think it's a shame because I definitely get a kick out of the cold bath outside and the breath holds. Not sure if I should continue despite the cold symptoms.

I remember when i was in a not so good mental state, I could somehow just ignore pain so i could self harm. I had to focus on ignoring it, it wasn’t like that all the time. I remember feeling it was there, knowing how it felt, but not letting it affect me. Wish I could still do that lolz, it could help with lots of things 😔

If one wants to understand how things work, one must understand that everything is a placebo. No matter what you believe, it is the truth for you.

With all respect, how doctor can undermindscientifical proofs of medical benefotd of ice bath and cold treatment? You did NOT watch scientific tests made with Win Hof. Surely. In contart I don't trust so called "medical" methods which in the end appear to bea lethal for most of the patients.

Funny thing about anecdotes is they don’t apply as evidence for other people, but they are literally the hardest form of evidence for the person with the anecdote because they have experienced it personally and you can tell them any number of proven facts but it means nothing if it contradicts direct personal experience.

If I wake up tomorrow and I’ve grown a foot taller overnight, it does not matter if that contradicts all known medical and biological science, common sense, past personal experience etc. It happened, and is therefore possible.

I loved fell walking in the English Lake District rain hail and snow. I love working outside even in the middle of winter but I hate being cold when not moving about. I get very cold during the night in winter. I need to wear extra clothes and woolly socks or I just cant sleep.
I grew up in a normal working class home in mild but damp coastal Lancashire N W England in the 1950s. We were cold all winter really. Much as most people before central heating became common.
Old socks and woollen cardigans as well as pyjamas. One coal fire in the downstairs living room. Bedrooms were cold. We used to put our heads under the blankets so our breath warmed us up. Also hands tucked between thighs to keep them warm. (Pace Freud). I do miss the Jack Frost patterns on the windows in the morning. But not the cold. Dad worked as a delivery driver for the railway. Like lots of outdoor workers he suffered with what they called catarrh which involved constant coughing up of thick plegm.
Mum had muscle spasms in her back and shoulders. Called rheumatism and also common.
When my parents finally got central heating when I was in my mid 20s both their normal winter problems disappeared.
We ate a lot of potatoes, pudding, bread without getting fat.
I dont really see the relevance of all this to the average person living an average lifestyle. Yoga style breathing isnt going to do harm and if it helps with anxiety etc but not impressed by the cold. Being cold most of the time is miserable.

The warning against practicing the Wim Hof breathing methods in water, does not apply to showers - correct?

Also, if falling or jumping into cold or freezing water under ordinary circumstances is a threat to your health, then surely doing so on purpose after coming out of a sauna is certainly dangerous!

AMAZING. AMAZING VIDEO. Honest and researched filled. Does not go against what is being spoken about nor giving high fives to this method instead pure and honest intelligent points. I am a US Infantry War Veteran with TBI , just began using this method and I love it I truly do, but it’s not something to put all your eggs in this basket, rather it’s AN EGG on the basket towards healing, full potential and growth. It all starts with Love. Loving God then oneself then others. Gotta say that I am loving this method but love science a lot more unfortunately science has been stained by profit and medication. I admire the Doctor who made this video and the funny sarcastic clips especially the “ it took my breath away” it’s an example of how a Doctor and a free soul can come together and help us all. KUDOS. TNX MAN FOR THIS VIDEO. Semper Fi! IM ALSO NOT WEARING ANY PANTS HAHAHAHA.

Thank you for a truly amazing summary! A long video deserves a long comment! :)

It just seems to me as a concerned layman, that the term "placebo" is sometimes being used as a modern medicine equivalent of "Here be dragons". The mere fact that there is an actual, strong scientific evidence of people being able to "think themselves out of sickness" is to me absolutely extraordinary and it may be beneficial to give the whole placebo thing much more attention. I would be much more interested in learning WHY it actually works - as the the range of its application seems to be quite wide and understanding the whole process to the point where it's easily reproducable could be of huge benefit to public health. What do you think?

In any case, this was really well done. Had to watch this multiple times as it's so packed with information - yet somehow it's still not too overwhelming. You really kept the viewer in mind. Every time I stopped to wonder what is this thing or that thing, you basically explained it right away as if you were reading my thoughts!

I have been a practitioner of some of the WHM elements for the last 3 years - mostly cold water exposure and breathing. Prior to that, I've been quite prone to bad respiratory infections that never really seemed to fully go away and escalated to full on illness 3-4 times a year. I am very aware that this may be a result of the so called placebo (also there happened to be a pandemic - so masks and distancing may have helped to prevent bunch of stuff, but it's worth mentioning that even after the pandemic, the effects seem to last). Since WHM, I have been sick once, when I got Covid, which in my case was relatively intense, but it only took me 2 days to recover.

That being said, it would be very interesting to see someone with your level of education and very healthy skepticism to perform a trial of WHM on your own skin (given that there are no medical conditions that would disallow you from doing so) and report on your experience!

personally i don't really struggle with cold temperatures unless i'm exposed to them for a long time

i'd even say exposing myself to cold temperatures actually boosts the immunity, but i guess it's just caused by increased blood circulation or something like that, staying in cold temperatures for longer periods of time is still harmful, just short bursts of cold can help

like i've realized that when i was going to school and had to wait like 30 minutes for my bus to arrive, i was getting sick basically every month or two, but now stuff got kinda better, i only have like 10-15 minutes of waiting and it's not the case anymore, i can even walk through rain and it's not a problem, just going on a quick 10-minute walk in the middle of the winter actually improved the way i felt, however i was walking in just slightly lighter clothes than usual to feel the cold, but not like having a t-shirt with shorts, it's better to be safe and not go as hard

cold showers exist afterall and those are parts of a daily routine for some people, it's something similar, ofc better make sure to control it and stop in case if something starts getting wrong

What do you think about nitrate (for example from spinach or even protein) to increase how much oxygen the cells take up? This appears to ("nominally") decrease blood oxygen levels, but only because the cells actually take up more oxygen, and thereby it also increases breathing efficiency, as breathing of course works via diffusion, and at 95% oxygen your breathing probably is a lot less effective at oxygenation than at 80% or so

I'm just not sure what that does to blood CO2, but it does seem to increase how much oxygen reaches the cells

There is new research on the Wim Hoff Breathing and it shows that it has a major impact on certain cytokines and inflammatory markers and thus might be beneficial as an adjuvant therapy in all diseases where inflammation or immune system dysfunction has been shown to be a contributing factor.
So basically, all inflammatory diseases, autoimmune diseases and neuro-psychiatric diseases.
However this is only the breathing part, not the "go and freeze to death part". However there have been various studies on thermal therapy and it also mainly will work via stimmulation of parasympaticus and sympaticus as well as immune system related cytokines and immune cell activity. (For some people though, warmth seem to be better than coldness)
(As a side note, I definetely do better in warm weather. But there are people who can't stand heat.)

Thanks for the beautiful video. I have watched and read a lot of content on the method and this is the first time it occurred to me that there's a lot of similarities to addiction theory, in that addiction can be described as the ever narrowing range of things that can provide joy. Similarly in trauma theory there's this idea of having a narrow window. And similarly in Buddhism and zen practice there's this emphasis on opening and widening and expansiveness. Thanks for the great video grounded in science and good humor.

Theory:
The wimhoff method even coworks and improves the placebo effect, because the immediate effect of a breathing session can be so enjoyable, that you practically get convinced easier that it works wonders.

Ecspecially today with dwindling concentration and patience due to our lifestyles, the wimhoff method may be perfect, because its effect is easily achieved and strong

I live in Finland. We have cold about half of the year. When I go out then the best thing I know to have is warm and dry hiking boots. When you walk to the shop the only feeling you have is that nice warmth in your feet. You don't care if it's raining and windfactor is what it is but as long as your feet are warm everything is fine. I also go to sauna once or twice a week where the temperature is about 110 centigrades and bath few hours. Walking back home the cold just does not register after that.

But this is just me. I'm not selling you anything and you welcome to live in here and try it out yourself.

Not sure how any of it works but as some one that worked outside in -40 in Alberta Canada for 12 winters there's a big difference in cold tolerance after all winter. Bare hands in the snow isn't an issue after a few weeks of climatization every fall. You don't need hardly any clothing to stay warm when working outside. been working mainly indoors for the last 8 years and my cold and pain tolerance has disappeared.

Also found a tolerance to mosquito bites built up over the years, especially after working summers in Labrador. That tolerance has disappeared as well. these things seemed to happen with my coworkers as well., both men and women.

New to channel.
I knew it appealed when you made me chuckle with the "set of skills, but cooler" ( agreed:)
Tonight I was at a friendly neighborhood birthday party for a much older man's 80th birthday celebration, where most
oof his friends are very well meaning, but mildly annoying, ex hippy new age types.
One of them started RAVING about a machine that can "heal."
This is not the first time I've heard this type of discussion in their presence, but the machine piqued my interest...
It supposedly hydrogenates your system with something called "dr. Brown's gas?"
In any case I looked it up online when I got home, only to find people with videos about how to set it up.
My suspicion is that it is some sort oof Ponzi scheme that plays on the magical thinking of willfully naive new agers, but maybe I'm wrong.
I'm too often the gadfly and before I break it to them that it's snake oil, maybe you know something about it?
It's called an "Aquacure machine."
Maybe someone in the comments knows something as well?

Placebo or no placebo does it really matter? If it works it works. to me it shows the unlimited potential of the mind and the body. but then again what do I know I’m just a high school dropout. i’ve been taking cold showers every day and I feel great. so for me it doesn’t matter if it’s science behind there or just placebo. Anyway good job

If you had actually tried it I’d have more time for you but your just trying to get hits and likes on the back of Wim Hoff.

All without meditation and whatever fancy oriental mental discipline, he was born in 1944 and still alive today!
As for Win Hof, I personally feel he is just a gifted narcissist who thinks has discovered whatever secret, but is just boasting his genetic luck!

But I know what I believe because my trying it is all the science I need. I find it hard to like an attitude of trying to pick apart something that clearly helps so many, does hurt anyone and doesn’t cost anything promoted by someone who really genuinely wants to help others. Funny how all of that evidence isn’t taken seriously as it’s too subjective 🙄

Wim Hoff method helped me during 2 horrible MS flares back in 2019 where I completlely lost balance, lost my hearing, lost all movility since I couldnt feel my legs, couldnt sleep or eat because of strong vertigo

Meanwhile I went to all kinds of doctors, they kept saying the same: its anxiety and depression🎉❤ youre just crazy

2023 I finally got my MS diagnose, I feel normal, other than my paralyzed eye because thankfuly i got covid prior to that

Now doctors and neurologists dont know why I dont have any more mobility issues, and are shooked because of the ammount of lesions I should be completely unable to do a lot

I feel normal because I kept doing the work back then 😂 but im kinda annoyed health profesionals keep acting like they have the cure when they dont even care

I came to the cold exposure part of this idea unconsciously.... I don't heat my home like I used to (too expensive) and when it's cold outside my indoor temperature is often 12-13°. I'm 59 and fairly healthy so not in a high risk category and I've noticed I tolerate cold much better now. To the point where I feel very uncomfortable in heated shops and other spaces. I can't claim any health benefits and I haven't done the ice baths/showers! But it's obvious that the human body can adapt as long as the person isn't elderly or sick.
