I think you came to the conclusion that trade surges are worse than just following an established trade route and that is my conclusion also. At least in the way you approached it here. I’m not sure there is a way to optimize the trade surge to be competitive with normal trade routes but it’s a fun exercise to attempt. There are all sorts of approaches to this and maybe you’ll find a worthwhile method. Thanks for the deeper dive!

I checked my numbers and Buying all goods in a 3 star system and selling them in the appropriate system for profit returns a profit of 8-9 million units. The process takes 5-10 minutes but once you have bases set up at the trade terminals you can repeat this step in a minute. Trade surges require too much time collecting goods. Need to find a better way to leverage the surge prices....

Do you need to sell to the station for trade surges or can you sell to pilots or trading posts? Otherwise you're always gonna crash the economy. Generally you'd sell to a pilot to avoid this but i don't know if you can do that and get the extra surge profit.
