Personally, I prefer the older style maps.
Where it was about the race, and not how much shit you can fit on screen at once.

Newer maps are just object vomit and no idea where you're going.

While this just feels like a cultural statement in general, I'd like to note the even as you got later the most awarded maps were still mostly just good design not fancy textures. How strange for a racing game to award a track that feels good to drive.

I spent so much time trying to get better times on Somewhere I Belong, and that map has such good flow, just the right mix between complexity and speed... my absolute favourite.

I have not heard "Kumpelblase" as in being friendzoned. Kumpelblase originates from Spongebob AFAIK, when he creates his Bubble-Buddy. In the German translation he calls him "Kumpelblase".
