In 45 the SS was a shell and a shadow of its former self. By the end of the war only the uniform was the same. The men were dregs and who ever they could round up to fill the ranks.

The "W" in the German word "Wiking* is pronounced as the English "V". They should be pronouncing it as the English word Viking (sounds the same in German) which also has the same meaning. To pronounce it starting with the pronounciation of the name of the English letter "Y" followed by "-king" is obfuscating and sounds silly in my opinion. Besides that, the pronunciations are fine, with the exception I guess, that to remain completely consistent, the pronunciation of Waffen, should be prounouced as the English spelling "Vaffen" would be. A lot of good information in this post.

Yes, I know there the biggest "country" in the world. Always seemed like they had unlimited manpower, but not enough guns to give them though.

The German Army didn't have many options in 1945. Many choices were made because it was the only choice. Staying on the defense wasn't going to help the situation in their favor. And even if they could have prolonged the war a few months, which wouldn't have changed the military situation, it might have earned them the atomic bomb

Though the strategy of mobile defence was excellent ,and even feasable in the mid 1943 ,it soon became unfeasable from fall 1943 onwards,Hitler might not have been so wrong on insisting positional defence,he knew that to carry out mobile defence ,you need trucks and mobile infantry ,to use them ,you need fuel which Germany was lacking ,also there was one more pressing issue which was the bombardment of German refineries and allied air campaign which required German luftwaffe to intensify operations over the western and German skies,which required more fuel,also training those pilots ,which required even more fuel. So all in all hitler knew strategic warfare better than his generals . His generals were exceptional and excellent in tactical and operational domain,but Hitler was good in strategic domain. The reason why Guderian preferred German formations to be at vistual a river in january of 1945 instead of being put into hungary,once again Guderian was not wrong on an operational level ,but Hitler is documented saying something like that "who will tell them(Generals) that tanks and aircrafts require fuel to operate them"

Division viking was full of scandinaves 1200 Danes from freicorr/Frikorps Dänemark/ Danmark , Norwegians, swedes, Netherlands , Belgians etc. A very capable division. The div. Totenkopf was earlyer kz Camp guards, the 1. Ss div. Leibstandarte and the 2. ss div. Das Reich was the 3-4 Elite divisions together with div. GroßDeutchland from the werhmacht. You se the archangel Rune from Das Reich, is being copyed and used of Ukraines Azov battalion or Brigade.. (A3OB)..

Hadn't heard before that Goering stood up for the men of the Leibstandarte.

It says a lot because Goering's Luftwaffe and Himmler's SS were bitter rivals. For years Goering had set up the Luftwaffe as a purely national socialist organization, with troops like the Fallschirmjager being the pride of the nazi party.

Great video, only one thing I've never heard Sepp Dietrich refered to as Josef. I know its hus birth name but commonly he was called Sepp.

I always wonder if Manstein’s strategy of mobile defence would have better preserved German forces and worn down Soviet forces sufficiently, if used from 1943 on under Manstein as OberOst. As opposed to Hitler’s dogged bias towards positional defence, including use of WW1 jargon mocked by Manstein after the war.

The order to remove cuff titles was a moot point as they'd already been removed prior to the beginning of the offensive for security reasons. Also Dietrich never passed the message on to the troops as morale was bad enough. He didn't want to make it any worse due to one of Hitlers unjustified rants.
