May Day honors the 1886 Haymarket riots. I did my 7th grade social studies project on this topic. Adults from outside the school came to see the presentation. May 1st is the real labor day. May Day ought to be a Federal holiday instead of the false substitute in September. If it weren't for events like the Haymarket riots and the Pullman strike, then there would be no minimum wage, 8 hour work day and no more child labor. Working conditions are also a lot safer because of the labor movement that took place over a century ago. May Day celebrates what has already been gained. It honors unions. It's about gratitude.
