Dr. Phil Garrison (DAOM) interviews Dr. Stephen Boyanton (PhD) about his doctoral research on the Shang Han Lun. In this interview, Dr. Boyanton details the sociopolitical factors that led to the rise of a new class of scholar-physicians in the Song dynasty. Proponents of this new literati medicine were especially fond of the Shang Han Lun, a collection of formulas from the later Han dynasty that developed a model of pattern differentiation based on the six channels.

Dr. Phil Garrison, DAOM, is an adjunct professor at the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in San Diego, California. His specialty is the Chinese medical classics.

Dr. Stephen Boyanton, PhD, is the director of sinological research at the Xinglin Institute (http://www.xinglininstitute.org). In May (2015), he completed his PhD in the department of East Asian languages and cultures at Columbia University.
