🐍 HIGHLY VENOMOUS EASTERN BROWN SNAKE COMES AT YOU - WHAT DO YOU DO?
When people recount experiences of being ‘chased’ it is most definitely a misunderstanding of the snake's intensions/ behaviour, so allow me to explain. When a human or a territorial (or inquisitive) pet suddenly encounters a snake, the snake reacts in one of the following ways: Fight, Flight or Crypsis - remaining still to avoid detection. Let me explain the fight and flight, as they are the hardest for people to understand in regards to snakes.

FIGHT - is where the snake acts DEFENSIVELY (not aggressively) towards a person because they perceive us as a threat or predator. This defensive behaviour may include; rearing up, hissing, gaping of the mouth, flattening their necks out to look bigger, mock striking and head butts. Occasionally snakes may advance towards a perceived threat in order to force their opponent to retreat so they can feel safe enough to make a quick getaway – This is the behaviour people often mistake for chasing.

FLIGHT - is the most common response where a snake will flee to the nearest cover or safe place as you can clearly see this Eastern Brown doing in this video. Sometimes, that safe place is on the other side of the person, giving the impression that the snake is B-lining directly for us, or ‘chasing’ us. If the person moves around during this advance, the snake may get startled and enter into defensive behaviour, and then go back to fleeing once they feel safe again. Either way, the snake has no desire to bite unless it believes it has no other option to defend itself.

A snake displaying defensive behaviour can easily be avoided by either remaining completely still like I did in this video (so you don’t come across as threatening), or by moving out of the snake's vicinity, either slowly or quickly deepening on your best judgment of the situation. Once the snake stops perceiving you as a threat, they will go back to leaving you alone.
