Thank you! What a super useful information video! I learned a lot ❤
ОтветитьWe like to joke about France 🇫🇷 but they could give anyone a very bad day
ОтветитьIt was the British Navy or the Royal Navy not the English Navy.
The English did not invent the carronade. It was Robert Melvill, who was Scottish. The first carronades were also made in Scotland.
No mention of Admiral Nelson, the Battle of the Nile, Captain Foley - a Welshman, the Battle of Trafalgar, Captain Cochrane - a Scotsman, the Battle of the Basque Roads etc etc
But then why would they? What did les rosbifs ever achieve? 😉
Excellent French documentary, though in classic Gallic style it sometimes shows itself somewhat reluctant to acknowledge British developments that overshadowed France's own. A good example here being the account of the first (yes, French) ironclad "battleship", the wooden-hulled-on-iron-frames but also heavily iron armoured "La Gloire", which indeed, as is intimated, immediately rendered all other major warships obsolescent when launched in 1859. So far so good! However, the programme then unaccountably goes straight on to assert this all represented a lead in naval architecture that Britain didn't catch up with for another 20 years....
Which in truth is absolute garbage, though it does explain the omission of ANY mention of the real British response. Which was revealed only ONE year later in 1860 with the appearance of HMS Warrior. An iron hulled AND armoured ship of more than twice 'Gloire's displacement, plus with massively greater armament as well. In short, 'Warrior' had the same effect on 'Gloire' as the French ship had achieved w.r.t. earlier rivals; it made it instantly obsolescent.
The remark about a 20 year French lead in naval architecture is thus somewhat puzzling. As in truth, from 'Warrior' onward, right up to 'Dreadnought' and beyond, through WW1 and after, Britain and the Royal Navy never lost their position as the world's unrivalled, virtually hegemonic sea power. Including due to British technical primacy. Which persisted right up until the 1922 Washington Treaty ushered in a two decade period of parity with Britain's ultimate successor, the USA.
Voice over for every person…
ОтветитьWeird how the French were so good at building ships, yet the English just kept defeating them in theirs? X-D
Ответитьi like your thumbnail with russian submarine Moscov 😄😄😄😄

ОтветитьGlad to see the losing side making their own videos
ОтветитьIowa Class will always be the most badass
ОтветитьPatrick O'Brian is rolling in his grave. This must be a joke
ОтветитьThe only nuclear powered surface ship????? I guess you mean French. Fact check yourself.
ОтветитьAre you going to give your ships away again in the next war you lose? It's history so don't be upset, think.
ОтветитьThere will always be war unless each country put in their constitution to not be the first to attack like Japan has done.😊
ОтветитьOn screen we can see ruz pr. 955 esmitetz ship. Battleships didnt evolve into ruzzian rusty wessels. Ruzzians are not a part of European civilization
ОтветитьEvery time I watch one of your videos and there are two people talking simultaneously in two languages I stop watching and find something else. Why would you not mute the audio on one or do the translation consecutively. Dubbing and leaving the original language audible simultaneously produces a terrible jumbled sound.
ОтветитьAn amazing documentary on the history of warships. Why does it focus on France, though?
ОтветитьWhen I was a teenager, I was in sea cadets in Canada. We had the opportunity to go to the USA and train on one of their navel bases for 2 weeks.
Norfolk Virginia is where I was. I can say with certainty that the French aircraft carriers have got nothing on americas and I’m not even American.
The amount of sheer firepower on that base was jaw dropping. From nuclear subs, to battle ships to aircraft carriers so big you can’t even begin to imagine it without setting foot on the deck yourself.
Airplanes made warships obsolete except for aircraft carriers which aren't really warships per say..

In association with THE NATIONAL MARITIME MUSEUM.
The title insinuates the documentary covers the whole history of naval warships, then it turns out to be a pretty much only a Francophile perspeective. I found myself doubting if Roman/Greek galleys were part of Louis XIII, Richelieu's 17th century French Navy. I stopped there. I have better things to do with my life than fact check the French world view.
ОтветитьI want ancient ships to challenge modern warships
ОтветитьImagine sailing through a dark sea trying to invade Britain and this begins playing. ‘’RULE BRITANNIA BRITANNIA RULES THE WAVES!’’
ОтветитьIt's cute when the French try to show off their military.
ОтветитьWas anyone else annoyed by the label "ironclad" being applied to ships built entirely from iron?
ОтветитьWarships are old news…. Same people that thought trenches and barbed wire would stop the Nazis.
ОтветитьThis episode is a weird blend of old Discovery and new Discovery. Lots of interesting information punctuated with strange sensationalism and over dramatization.
ОтветитьThe model ships were amazing. What incredible craftsmanship that would have taken. Big or small.
ОтветитьIt's tough to take the beginning of this video seriously because they use badass music to make the French navy seem badass but it's so pitifully small compared to the United States Navy lmao.
ОтветитьTrue when the Dutch introduced the line of fire battles against the French took a few hours. Against the British took days. 😂 After five wars the British won!
