This movie does the Man vs Nature story just right. No side is better than the other, and no side is worse than the other.
ОтветитьTook me years to learn that the Emishe are the natives of the Japanese islands.
Ответитьif this aint the theme when im ascending to heaven, i aint going
ОтветитьIt’s my favourite movie out of all. My girlfriend said she doesn’t like anime, then I showed her this movie and she was in love.

Ответитьa lot of people see this as man against nature I'd say it's rather man against his alienation, and both of those against nature. Hence why there's a differenciation between the village people and the emishi with the samurais and the imperials. The emishi decided to live away and recluse from the alienated folks, which is a phenomenon that you can see a lot irl for exemple the basques the albanians or the mapuche amongst all the tribals who lived around the incas. My dad read a story from iirw Clastres, idk if it was a mapuche story or a quichua story. It detailed how one day an inca came to a village. He'd demand a wife. The village folk go around and find him one. Later they both disappear and he comes back and demands another wife. It all happens again and another girl accepts. Again, they disappear and he comes back much later once again demanding another wife. As they kill him and go to his home, they discover that the wives he had been sent, he had devoured them. And so the inca eat women. Ofc it isn't to be taken litteraly, here this refers to the practices that the incas had of stealing women, Acllas, for wife making, manifacturing different items, brewing beer, and for the "luckiest", being sacrificed to the gods. This is the same metaphor used by the people of the yucatan, and the aztecs to describe the spanish as apes with a piggish hunger for gold (it's in the florentine codex if I'm not bullshiting too much), it just means spaniards or incas have both a hunger for things that cannot ever be sassiated. Eboshi burns the forest for more iron, in this sense she could be said to hunger for it and the power it gives her makes it unsatiable, using their metaphor, idk if this shit is clear. The monk hungers for the power that the head of the forest spirit would give him, and the samurais hunger for women, loot and territory. When I watched this w my gf I just thought that it was a metaphor on the supreme hunger for power that Man has, the victims it makes both who serve it and who face it, is what I meant. Anyways cool music too, and generaly the movie is fucking good, thank u Miazaki.

ОтветитьI lived in Japan for 3 years (specifically on the island Okinawa cause my parents were in the military) and whenever the typhoon season rolled in they would have the entire school just packed in the massive library that they had and we would all just sit and silence because we had to listen for announcements cause yk there’s literal typhoons going on outside. But anyway to calm the us kids down (this was an elementary school and I was in there from 1st to 3rd grade so I was like really young) they would play Ghibli films on the projector with the big speakers that could somehow fill the whole place without being too loud. I don’t know what it was but something about this film specifically combined with the suppressed sounds of heavy rain and speeding winds outside (the whole building was built like a bunker) that just calmed all the kids. This movie is damn special to me and I can’t even say why it’s just something you have to watch to see why so many people see it as Ghibli’s best film.
