FIRST THING'S FIRST: IT'S MY BIRTHDAY TODAY (as of posting this video)!

In my last episode covering individual places and their sketchy histories I covered the old demolished Lotus Hotel/Cafe/Cardroom. In this episode I b-line right up 2nd Avenue to a place that still stands: the old Holm Hotel at 2nd and Burnside in the heart of Portland's historic Skid Row. Built c. 1890 this seemingly forgotten building actually has an interesting history, but in this video we are primarily focusing on the history of one of the establishments on the building's ground floor. Back in the early decades of the 1900s the ground floor consisted of a saloon and theater run by a semi-notorious figure named Fred Fritz. His place was about as riddled with crime as any other place in the area at that time be it illegal gambling, prostitution, violating prohobition, and so on.
In addition to this history I do cover the building as a whole seeing as Fritz's place closed down more than a century ago. Much of the Holm's history, especially between 1920 and 1960 is very obscure and it appears the building has mostly been vacant for a long time. But I do my best to cover these later decades, including the building's time as "Portland's last great flophouse".
