listening to this while working on a AP World History model on this, and after alot of research this is what ive learned. The ATF had no idea of what was actually happening there, only knew about the guns. So they lied to the National Guard to possess 2 military helicopters and began to besiege the fort. Texas police tried to get the ATF to call it off but to no avail. The ATF besieged the fort until the Branch Davidians lit fire to their own fort before surrendering. It was only after these events that the truth about the cult was discovered.

The attack on the fort wasnt to end the horrors in its walls, but for personal glory by the ATF.

The sad truth is that Koresh and the Branch Davidians were pushed into a corner by the ATF and had their delusions of persecution turned into a reality because the feds were too damn intent on getting quick results to keep negotiating and get the matter resolved without further bloodshed. There's no denying that David Koresh was scum; he had taken multiple wives including several underage girls, one of whom was pregnant at age 14 because of him. They had plenty of chances to nab him outside of the compound though, and before the final assault on the compound he was being convinced to surrender once he finished his last writing. Feds were just too impatient and instead of getting that bastard on trial so he could pay for his crimes, they killed him and 75 other people he'd convinced to believe in his insanity.
